The Star Trek: Picard Season 3 trailer was released recently, and there is a lot to take in. One beat from the trailer was particularly nostalgic to fans of the original series, as you can hear the boatswain whistle sound off when Admiral Picard and Captain Riker step aboard the USS Titan. Executive producer and showrunner Terry Matalas expounded on the decision to use the boatswain whistle, telling Trek Movie “I very much prefer Starfleet to feel like the Navy,” adding “And certainly, The Original Series and a lot of what [Star Trek II and VI director] Nick Meyer did feels like that the most.”

If you’re a fan who is wondering if the boatswain whistle in the trailer for Star Trek: Picard is the same as the one in Star Trek VI, Matalas has answers for you too. He said “It felt like those whistles are usually traditional and are passed down from ship to ship to ship,” and “I suppose it could be the same one [from Star Trek VI] or just an older, hundreds-year-old model.” While this isn’t a definitive answer, it does seem like Matalas is making a concerted effort to pay tribute to the Star Trek creators that came before.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is set to be the final season of the series, which brought back Patrick Stewart in his beloved role. It remains to be seen if Stewart is also wrapping up his Star Trek career after this final season. While there are undoubtedly a lot of plot lines to wrap up, it seems like Picard will be getting the proper send-off he deserves.

Along with Patrick Stewart, Star Trek: Picard stars Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Harry Treadaway, Evan Evagora, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, and Marina Sirtis. Ed Speleers will also be joining the regular cast in Season 3. We don’t have to wait long to see the Season 3 premiere, as it’s set to hit Paramount+ on Thursday, February 16.

The third season of Star Trek: Picard will have a total of ten episodes, with the finale airing on April 20. New episodes will be coming out every Thursday. We’ll have to wait and see if the season finale will be setting up any future storylines for the crew of The Next Generation.

If you’re looking to fill the Star Trek: Picard-shaped hole in your heart after the final season airs, Paramount+ has you covered with plenty of other ongoing Star Trek shows. While Picard is on its way out the door, there are still new seasons coming for Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Also, the fourth film in the JJ Abrams Kelvin Timeline is still in the works, though there’s no news on a release date yet.

Even when all of these series come to a close, we can expect plenty more Star Trek projects in the future. In February 2021, it was announced that new projects would begin development once the current slate of shows wrapped up their runs. Reports indicate that these new shows would include a Michelle Yeoh-led show where she plays the mirror universe’s Philippa Georgiou along with a show set at Academy.

In the meantime, there is plenty of Star Trek to catch up with. If you’re not caught up on Star Trek: Picard, make sure to check out the first two seasons before the premiere. Stay tuned here for more information on all current and upcoming Trek shows.
