With the release of the third Spider-Man film later this year, Spider-Man will have appeared in a dozen films over the last two decades. This upcoming film will be the second time a Spider-Man series has reached a third film, with the first being Tobey Maguire’s 2007 film Spider-Man 3. Not only that, but this new film will be the second “3” that Kevin Feige has produced. Since there have already been so many Spider-Man films, Feige has just revealed what the working title for this latest Spider-Man installment is, and it’s not Spider-Man 3.

Kevin Feige spoke to ComicBook, stating how surreal it is that he’s once again making a Spider-Man 3, considering he worked on Sam Raimi’s version as well. So while Feige says that it’s fine that people are calling it Spider-Man 3, he says “We call it Homecoming 3.” While Feige isn’t ready to reveal the title just yet, he does confirm “It’s not Spider-Man 3.” If the titles of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home are an indication, it seems extremely likely that this third Spider-Man film will at least have “home” in the title.

It is curious that Kevin Feige hasn’t unveiled the title of this Spider-Man 3 film yet, especially considering the titles have already been revealed for films far beyond this year. Films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ant-Man and Wasp: Quantumania – which doesn’t even have a release date yet – have all had their full titles announced, while 2021’s Spider-Man film is still untitled.

Marvel has done this in the past, as they wait for other earlier titles to be released before stating the name of future releases. For example, the title of Avengers: Endgame wasn’t announced until after Avengers: Infinity War. Kevin Feige has also said that this Spider-Man 3 is the middle of a loose trilogy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four, alongside WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It seems likely that we probably won’t know the true title for Spider-Man 3 aka Homecoming 3 until after the last episode of WandaVision airs in March.

Kevin Feige has also said that Spider-Man 3 / Homecoming 3 will bring Peter Parker out of the shadow of his mentor, Tony Stark. However, it’s unclear if Parker’s new mentor might be Doctor Strange, as it has been announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will be reprising his role for this third Spider-Man.

With the multiverse supposedly opening up, and with characters from previous Spider-Man iterations already joining the cast of this new film, it’s entirely possible that Parker’s new mentor could, in fact, be a previous Spider-Man actor like Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield. It also seems extremely likely that the title of the next Spider-Man could reference this opening or universes and the multiverse craziness that is coming for Parker. Spider-Man 3 or Homecoming 3 is too basic a title for a film that is sure to be insane.

As of right now, Spider-Man 3 / Homecoming 3 / whatever it’s called will be released on December 17, 2021, hopefully with a title.
