South Park Creators Finally Begin Active Production On Long-Awaited Project With The Biggest Rapper
If you’ve been keeping up with movie news in recent months, you may already be aware that South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are collaborating with acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar on an upcoming feature film.
South Park Guys And Kendrick Lamar
Though the project has been confirmed for nearly three years, fans haven’t heard much about it until recently, prompting a flurry of questions regarding the status of the movie. Luckily, a few eagle-eyed fans caught sight of the production beginning in California this week, meaning the cameras are finally rolling.
The videos circulating social media seem to show the South Park creators standing alongside Kendrick Lamar, setting up scenes for the shoot and filming for the first time.
Project Is Under Wraps
The current set is located in Pomona, California, roughly 40 miles from Lamar’s hometown of Compton and only slightly further than the Kia Forum in Inglewood, where the Pulitzer Prize-winning vocalist recently performed his “Pop Out” Juneteenth concert.
The project is being kept tightly under wraps, so the fan videos don’t display much, but camera and lighting equipment can be seen, as Kendrick himself converses with Stone, Parker, and several other cast and crew members.
Live-Action Comedy Focused On Race
What the fans do know so far is that the film will be a live-action comedy that focuses on race and American history, likely with the same critical lens that South Park offers to many controversial issues.
The project still has no confirmed title, though it is said to center around a young black man who works as a slave re-enactor, and his white girlfriend who comes to discover that her family once owned slaves of their own.
Kendrick Lamar is attached to produce the film, along with his partner and pgLang co-founder Dave Free, though some fans have speculated that the multi-platinum selling entertainer may also have an on-camera roll in the project.
Kendrick Lamar’s Other Projects
For now, neither of the South Park creators nor Kendrick Lamar have said much about the cast, though Kendrick has shown his ability to embody a character with his performance of Laces in the Starz original series Power.
Kendrick is also poised to play a fictionalized LEGO version of himself in the upcoming Pharrell Williams biopic Piece by Piece, alongside other acts such as Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, and Pusha T.
If Kendrick does take center-stage, this project will serve as the live-action film debut of the “Not Like Us” vocalist.
South Park Guys Have Been Here Before
While this news is quite exciting, it actually doesn’t mark the first time that the South Park creators have worked with Kendrick Lamar.
The pair previously handled video effects and deepfake technology on the rapper’s 2022 music video “The Heart Part 5” through their company Deep Voodoo.
The effects see Lamar’s face morphing to mimic that of Kanye West, OJ Simpson, Nipsey Hussle, and several other prolific black entertainers.
Still A Long Process
South Park producer Vernon Chatman serves as the screenwriter for the untitled Kendrick Lamar collaboration, which makes perfect sense as the writer has ventured off to work with several other rappers in the past.
Chatman previously collaborated with Killer Mike on the Netflix original series Trigger Warning with Killer Mike, and helped bring Doggie Fizzle Televizzle to life with Snoop Dogg on MTV.
At this time, there’s still a long production process to go before fans can watch the film, though it’s certainly encouraging to see that shooting has finally started.
