Shazam! Fury of the Gods turned out to be a disappointing, albeit not surprising, movie showing what DC fans can expect from the final films of the Snyderverse with the looming reset promised by James Gunn and his new DCU. While it only picked up a $30 million opening weekend (according to a Deadline report), there were some redeeming qualities, including the performances from Zachary Levi and the rest of the Shazam family. According to Grace Caroline Currey, who plays both the human and enhanced versions of Mary Marvel in the film, there was a deleted scene showing her character joining a college party that would have explained the somewhat random hangover her character had at one point in the film.

What sets Shazam apart from other installments in the DCEU is that it feels like a completely different animal; the films are lighter in tone than the rest of the Snyderverse brooding aura. They also have the dynamic of setting up a team that is a built family (different from the Justice League or Suicide Squad, which are thrown together team-ups), causing virtually the entire inner conflict of the film. While the Shazam family has to face off against the mighty Daughters of Atlas and their Game of Thrones-esque pet dragon, Billy Batson, AKA Shazam, also has to find a way to keep the family together, desperate not to lose the only family he has ever had.

For Grace Caroline Currey, Mary Marvel is the only one in the group approaching 21 years of age and becoming an adult, setting her apart from the rest of the group. For the rest of them, they only have to worry about school and defending their city from constant threats, while Mary must also consider her future and living a life on her own. This dynamic seemed to be shoved into the background in favor of focusing on the relationship between Billy and his best friend and foster brother, Freddie, played by Jack Dylan Grazer

While it is relatively understandable to focus on the Billy and Freddie dynamic as it is a carryover from the first Shazam film, by losing a new, arguably better, character arc from Grace Caroline Currey. With this possibly being her last film with DC as the current franchise comes to a close in favor of the new James Gunn reboot, this seems like it could be yet another missed opportunity that fans are going to experience from the massively flawed Snyderverse. Unfortunately for DC and their fans, that is par for the course considering everything reported from behind the scenes of all the movies.

From Ben Affleck’s solo Batman film, Henry Cavill‘s Superman sequel, and Dwayne Johnson’s blocking of Zachary Levi’s appearance in Black Adam, this universe seems to be miss after miss as it comes to a close. Luckily for those who are fans of the comics and are hungry for more, James Gunn and Peter Safran believe they have what it takes to revive the franchise. Unfortunately, Grace Caroline Currey is likely not a part of that future.
