When Star Trek: Lower Decks brought us an episode centered around Deep Space Nine, many fans were left wondering: Where is the Defiant? Now we may have an answer. The iconic ship may have been off on a mission for the clandestine organization Section 31.

A Defiant class ship appeared as a cliffhanger at the end of the Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 episode “Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus”. Here’s how she looked…

Whether it was the actual USS Defiant or just another ship of the Defiant class ship is unclear, as the neither the ship’s name nor registry number was visible during its brief appearance.

The Defiant class seen in Star Trek: Lower Decks does look a little bit different than the USS Defiant did, the last time we saw her. The year was 1999 and she was last seen in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine finale episode “What You Leave Behind”. Here’s how the Defiant looked in live action at the time…

The big difference most worth noting is that her nacelles are now a little bit pointy. That doesn’t mean it isn’t the actual USS Defiant, it’s been a few years since we’ve seen her, it’s entirely possible and even likely that she underwent a refit since then.

The first ship of the class was the USS Defiant, which was destroyed. The second was the USS Sao Paolo which was renamed USS Defiant after the first ship’s destruction.

What we know for sure is that this Defiant class is being used by the infamous organization Section 31. They successfully recruited Boimler’s transporter clone into the organization as a cliffhanger at the end of this Lower Decks episode. After faking his death, it is on board this Defiant that Section 31 gives Boimler his not-so-secret black combadge.
