With Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe coming to a near close this year, actor Chris Pratt will soon be saying goodbye to his character Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Pratt will be seen in the upcoming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special after a brief, but memorable, part in this summer’s Thor: Love and Thunder. 2023 will bring Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will help usher in Phase Five of the MCU’s plans for future movies, but Pratt will ultimately leave the Guardians franchise behind. Looking to new and exciting endeavors, Chris Pratt has set his sights on voicing a familiar character in 2024’s Garfield, along with a stellar cast.

According to a report by Variety, the Chris Pratt-led Garfield movie has added a slew of cast members to its ever-growing ensemble of voice-over professionals. Joining Pratt will be the already announced Samuel L. Jackson, as well as Ving Rhames, The Great star Nicholas Hoult, Ted Lasso favorite Hannah Waddingham, and Saturday Night Live veteran Cecily Strong. The movie is a feature film adaptation of the popular cartoon strip about Garfield, the ever-so-surly and lazy cat who can’t seem to get enough lasagna and remarks about how much he hates Mondays. Pratt will provide the voice of Garfield for this newest installment, a character who has previously been voiced by actor Bill Murray in Garfield: The Movie and its sequel, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.

At this time, it has not been confirmed who many of these additional cast members will voice in Chris Pratt’s iteration of Garfield. However, Deadline reports that Samuel L. Jackson will play the voice of Vic, Garfield’s father. Jackson’s role was written just for this film and does not appear in any of the source material comic strips by creator Jim Davis that the character of Garfield is based on. Garfield will be the first time that the orange tabby cat’s parentage will be reflected onscreen, which will most likely provide a great deal of sarcasm from the witty feline.

For Chris Pratt to play Garfield opposite heavyweights of film and television like Samuel L. Jackson and Cecily Strong is no easy feat, but the Minnesota native has had some previous practice. Pratt famously voiced Emmet Brickowski in The Lego Movie alongside Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett. He reprised the role in the sequel, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, before jumping into Onward with Tom Holland, Octavia Spencer, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in 2020. Pratt will also lend his voice to the lead character of Mario in a future adaptation of the popular Nintendo video game, Super Mario Bros. The latter film will costar Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Seth Rogen, according to IGN. Garfield is expected to open in theaters in February 2024 and will be directed by Mark Dindal of The Emperor’s New Groove fame, from a script written by Finding Nemo screenwriter David Reynolds.
