The parody biopic appears to be one of the most popular mediums currently, as Daniel Radcliffe recently portrayed Weird Al Yankovic in the Weird: The Al Yankovic Story movie. Now, Owen Wilson is set to portray someone that bears a striking resemblance to Bob Ross. The first image has been shown for the movie, which includes showing Wilson with a perm like Ross, a landscape painting, and a tobacco pipe in his mouth.

While Bob Ross was never shown smoking on his long-running PBS painting show, everything else about the character seems to indicate that Owen Wilson is indeed a parody of Bob Ross. The new movie is aptly titled, Paint, and will be directed and written by Brit McAdams. McAdams has famously worked on the stand-up special, Katt Willaims: American Hustle and Tosh.0.

Paint follows a painter by the name of Carl, who believes that he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and a drove of fans that hang on his every stroke. However, a new and younger painter comes into the picture and begins to steal away everything and everyone that Carl loves. Owen Wilson might be playing a clearly more dramatized version of Bob Ross, at least in the look of the character.

IFC Films has picked up the North American rights to Paint, and joining Owen Wilson’s psuedo Bob Ross is Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renée, Lusia Strus, Lucy Freyer, and Stephen Root. The movie will see a theatrical release in 2023 and be released to stream on AMC+ later that year as well. The comedy promises to bring with it plenty of laughs and plenty of heart.

Owen Wilson may be starring in Paint as a would-be Bob Ross figure, but he is coming off a great comeback in terms of both movies and shows. Wilson co-stars alongside Tom Hiddleston in Loki, which is currently working on its second season. We also reported that Wilson’s TVA Agent Mobius from Loki would be appearing in some capacity in Deadpool 3.

On top of his success in the MCU Wilson also starred in the highly successful Secret Headquarters, which became the biggest first-week release in Paramount+ history. While there has not been any news on a sequel, we would imagine that the network is going to get going on building out that family-friendly franchise. Owen Wilson has always been a great comedic actor, so we are more than excited to see him as this Bob Ross character, on top of returning to the previously mentioned roles in the future.

Paint will officially debut in theaters on April 28, 2023, before landing on AMC+ as a streaming title later that year. While we are not sure when this Owen Wilson Bob Ross-Esque movie will arrive on streaming, we would imagine the “later” in this scenario points to a summer or early fall month release. This new parody movie might be channeling Mr. Bob Ross, but we doubt the movie will make that connection unless it plans to be a meta-comedy.
