The final installment of the Halloween franchise, Halloween Ends, is almost here, and fans now have a new peek at perhaps the most anticipated confrontation in the film. A new photo (shown above) shared by USA Today shows Laurie Strode(Jamie Lee Curtis) going toe-to-toe with the masked serial killer Michael Myers. In the photo, Laurie appears to be struggling to fend off Myers, who in the last film murdered Laurie’s daughter Karen in Judith Myer’s old bedroom. The film is said to feature the final confrontation between Laurie and the famed horror icon. Halloween Ends comes after the success of the 2018 sequel, which grossed over $255 million dollars worldwide and became the highest-grossing slasher film in unadjusted dollars. The record was previously held by Wes Craven’s 1996 horror classic Scream.

Universal Pictures recently announced that the Jamie Lee Curtis-led horror sequel would premiere both in theaters and on Peacock. The announcement stunned many fans who expected to shelve out cash at their local theaters to watch the final installment. Interestingly, the studio did a similar thing by releasing Halloween Kills on the streaming service for 60 days under the paid tier. The decision came as many studios were still trying to navigate the treacherous waters following the COVID-19 pandemic and the closing of movie theaters. Halloween Kills grossed $92 million in the U.S. and had a worldwide total of $131.6 million. The sequel failed to receive the same level of praise as its predecessor, with many critics claiming the film was a huge step backward. The studio announced Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends following the first film’s release in 2018. In an interview with Upprox, director David Gordon Green revealed the final installment will take place four years after Halloween Kills and will address the COVID-19 pandemic.

Halloween is often cited as one of the earliest examples of the “final girl” slasher film archetype with Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode. Regarding Curtis’ casting, the story goes that her manager was persistent that the original 1978 horror film filmmakers met with the actress about being cast as Laurie. Director John Carpenter admitted in interviews that Curtis wasn’t the first choice to play the iconic final girl. Carpenter wanted to cast Anne Lockhart, who was the daughter of Lassie’s June Lockhart. The producer of the film, Debra Hill, admitted that after learning Curtis was the daughter of Psycho actress Janet Leigh, she found Curtis’ casting an intelligent choice. Curtis would go on to appear in numerous Halloween projects. The original 1978 film is often credited for inspiring many of today’s modern slasher flicks.

Halloween Ends is said to center on Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode dealing with the aftermath of Michael Myer’s vicious rampage in the last film. After letting her obsession with Michael consume her life for decades, Laurie is finally settling in with her granddaughter Allyson and finishing her memoir, when a young man is accused of murdering a boy he was babysitting. The film is set to release on October 14th.
