With Secret Invasion, Samuel L. Jackson and company could bring to Disney+ one of its most comprehensive series yet with a story that likely has wide-ranging implications on the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. If the original comic book storyline is any proxy, the limited series could see us dealing with a problem that works its way into the storyline for all different kinds of characters. And it looks like the show has now added another MCU alum with Martin Freeman of Black Panther joining the cast with Jackson himself confirming the actor’s involvement.

The word came from Samuel L. Jackson who speaking at an event with Josh Horowitz (via ComicBook.com and ComicBookMovie) who confirmed that Martin Freeman was indeed reprising his role of Agent Everett K. Ross in the series. Freeman has appeared three other times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the character, having parts in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. About the casting and working together again Jackson said, “How amazing is that? Martin Freeman. Come on. When I walked in the room and Olivia Colman was standing there (too)…We just started laughing, and when we started to work, it was so glorious and such a ball.” Of course, with this Jackson also refers to Colman who has a role in the film though it isn’t clear exactly who she will be playing.

With Secret Invasion, we will be getting a story that is at least in some part adapted from the comic book series of the same name. In it, the Skrulls have invaded Earth and are impersonating all manner of folks in the world from politicians to superheroes themselves. It makes for a plot in which no one can really be trusted. We’ve seen some of this play out at least in part with the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home in which Talos and Soren were impersonating Nick Fury and Maria Hill, though that was at least on Fury’s orders while he was off-planet. In Secret Invasion, the impersonations could be much more subversive and there are likely to be many more Skrulls involved.

In addition to Samuel L. Jackson as Fury, Martin Freeman as Ross, Colbie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Ben Mendelsohn as the aforementioned Talos, the Secret Invasion cast will also include Emilia Clarke in another undefined role. Plus, Kingsley Ben-Adir is on as the primary antagonist, though we aren’t sure exactly who he is playing either. Christopher McDonald and Carmen Ejogo help to round out the rest of the cast.

It’s not totally clear when exactly we will see Samuel L. Jackson and company in Secret Invasion on Disney+. It’s most definitely part of Marvel’s Phase Four, but the streamer does like to space out its series and we know that the next in line is Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight which is set to premiere on March 20th. Basic timelines suggest that She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel will also be coming after those so it could be a while before we get this six-episode series.
