First Promo Picture For M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth
This article is more than 2 years old
Director M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi efforts have been, let’s say mixed, that’s diplomatic. Despite the critical walloping delivered to his last few films—like 2010’s The Last Airbender, and 2008’s The Happening—that’s not stopping big name Hollywood talent from lining up to work with him. Case in point his latest effort, the sci-fi actioner After Earth, which stars not one, but two members of the Smith clan: Will and Jaden. Now we have quick glimpse at the promotional material for the film.
Will and Jaden Smith play a father son team of astronauts who crash land on a now uninhabited Earth 1000 years in the future. The duo must explore the jungle terrain of the abandoned planet in order to find a way to survive.
The image is small, and doesn’t tell you much, but it does give a good sense of gloomy atmosphere. (You also get a glimpse at the poster for The Smurfs 2. Papa Smurf in sunglasses? What will they think of next?) The poster has a classic sci-fi look and feel to it, and this story sounds like a sparse, man-versus-nature/struggle-to-survive type of narrative. That’s a simple model for a plot, but one you can get a lot of millage out of if handled right. There are a lot of actors listed on After Earth’s IMDB page, so I have questions about how “uninhabited” this version of Earth really is.
I’m curious to see what kind of hardships, obstacles, and, presumably, creatures the Smith boys will face in their quest to remain alive. But hell, I’ll watch anything with Will Smith in it. Love that dude.
After Earth also stars Isabelle Fuhrman, Zoe Kravitz, and Sophie Okonedo.
