Guardians Of The Galaxy Concept Art Takes You To A Wretched Hive Of Scum And Villainy

GotG concept artThe Marvel Studios – Assembling a Universe TV special a few days ago documented Marvel’s rise to box office mastery beginning with Iron Man in 2008. While most of the special played like a commercial for Marvel Studios, the last 10 minutes featured new footage and concept art from upcoming Marvel movies such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and, of course, Guardians of the Galaxy.

The concept art featured above is from illustrator Charles Wen and showcases Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon in some sort of a space marketplace. It looks like it’s taken directly from Star Wars — it definitely has a Mos Eisley feel. Just add a few Stormtroopers and it would be easy to imagine Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker passing by the space outlaws on their way to meeting Han Solo and Chewbacca. The art is reminiscent of images released last year, which featured a similar scene with Rocket Raccoon and Drax the Destroyer.

The special also showed off this concept piece featuring Rocket Raccoon on top of Groot as the pair get ready for battle.

The special also introduced concept art for Ant-Man and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, showing off a first look at Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, played by Godzilla’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, respectively. We also got a look at The Hulk battling Tony Stark’s “hulkbuster” armor. You can see it in the gallery at the bottom.

The Assembling a Universe special was worth watching if you’re a fan of Marvel movies, but it’s doubtful that it drew in many viewers who weren’t already familiar with Marvel’s brand. Still, the program may have helped introduce the Guardians of the Galaxy to some viewers, and that will be important if the Guardians movie is going to be a hit this summer.

Recently it was revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy‘s post-credits sequence might tie-in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, leaked set photos revealed that S.H.I.E.L.D. might be involved somehow. Could we perhaps be seeing cameos from Agent Phil Coulson or Director Maria Hill?

Guardians of the Galaxy follows Peter Jason Quill (Chris Pratt), a half-human/half-alien who is at the center of a galaxy-wide manhunt after he steals a mysterious orb, which is believed to be one of the Infinity Gems. Once he’s caught and sent to a space prison, he tries to escape by building an alliance with a group of misfits and outlaws. When the team learns about the orb’s true power, they must work together to keep the galaxy safe from Ronan the Accuser and the evil Kree Empire.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close. It lands in theaters everywhere on August 1.
