Daleks Raise Money For Charity
There are many things Daleks are known for – single-mindedness, homicidal tendencies, lack of patience with Cybermen, having a toilet plunger for an arm – but compassion doesn’t usually rise to the top of the list. But recently a group of Daleks showed their squishy centers by making an appearance for charity in the mid-sized English town of Yeovil. The Doctor Who villains were on-hand traversing the streets of town and posing with children as part of a 10th anniversary celebration of a local park, which also included a charity fun run and a laser display.
The celebrations actually included a sci-fi double-whammy. The second day included a visit from Stormtroopers of the 501st UK Garrison, the “world’s largest and most accurate Star Wars costuming and re-enactment group”. Just like the other 501st members present at every fan convention across the globe, the costumed folks walked the streets of town posing for pictures and collecting donations for charities.
The proceeds from all of the weekend’s events went toward two local medical organizations – St Margaret’s Hospice and the Yeovil District Hospital’s Flying Colour’s Appeal. And the Daleks and Stormtroopers did pretty well in their fundraising efforts. This is Somerset reports that the UK Garrison alone raised £946.35 (about $1524 US) to benefit the hospital, which includes facility upgrades to areas like the Special Care Baby Unit. Just goes to show you that not even two of the greatest threats the universe has ever known can resist a sick baby.
