Scarlett Johansson and Pedro Pascal are teaming up for a new film titled The Missing Link, in which they will be pursuing the most classic mystery plot of them all and investigating a series of murders. According to our trusted and proven sources, the Mandalorian and the Black Widow will be starring in this new film for A24, a production and distribution studio primarily known for elevated horror. British filmmaker Susanna White is set to direct the film.

While A24 has been behind movies as disparate as the recent Academy Award-winning science fiction film Everything Everywhere All at Once and Adam Sandler’s jittery crime thriller Uncut Gems, it is definitely associated with cerebral, psychological horror, so it will be interesting to see if this new Scarlett Johansson mystery veers in that direction. On the other hand, traditional mystery films like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptations are having a bit of a revival right now, so it might just play it straight.

The Missing Link will involve Scarlett Johansson and Pedro Pascal as detectives attempting to solve a series of mysterious murders (are there any other kind?) that seem to be connected to a secret society. It can probably be assumed that the missing link of the title is a reference to said secret society, and not the underrated 2019 Hugh Jackman stop-motion animated movie of the same name.

It is also possible that the title of the Scarlett Johansson-Pedro Pascal movie refers to the concept of a hypothetical evolutionary ancestor that directly connects Homo sapiens to earlier forms of hominids. If the superbeing from Lucy and the world’s biggest Nicolas Cage fans are teaming up for some kind of Victorian-era scientist murder mystery about Darwin’s controversial theory of evolution, we’d be all for it. But that is all supposition at this point, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Director Susanna White has a number of feature films under her belt, including 2017’s Western Woman Walks Ahead and the 2016 John le Carré adaptation Our Kind of Spy, but is best known for her work in directing numerous different television series. Among others, White has directed for the Prohibition crime series Boardwalk Empire, the period drama Masters of Sex, and Billions, but most recently helmed three episodes of the critically acclaimed Disney+ Star Wars series Andor.

As such, Scarlett Johansson and Pedro Pascal are probably in safe hands if they are looking for someone to handle a grim, morally ambiguous mystery story. Johansson will soon be appearing in the Wes Anderson science fiction film Asteroid City (along with Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Margot Robbie, and most of the rest of Hollywood), and we have previously reported that she will be returning for future appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Pedro Pascal is currently appearing in both The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, two of the most popular shows on television, so he’s doing fine for himself too.
