Sasha Calle Playing Supergirl In Woman Of Tomorrow?

Sasha Calle wants to keep playing Supergirl in the DCU under James Gunn.

We’ve known that Sasha Calle would be playing Supergirl in the upcoming DC film The Flash for some time now. However, it’s been unclear whether the actress would continue to play the character after the cameo-heavy film effectively reboots the DC Universe in preparation for James Gunn’s plans. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Calle stated that she hopes to reprise the role in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film.

The upcoming film, which was announced by James Gunn back in January 2023, will be based on the 2021 comic book series of the same name. The somewhat-trippy eight-issue series by writer Tom King follows Kara Zor-El (AKA Supergirl) after an alien from a destroyed world seeks her out for help to get revenge on the beings responsible.

In the interview, Sasha Calle calls the story an “incredible comic” and states that she hopes she gets the chance to perform in it.

Calle said that landing the role of Supergirl is a dream job for her. According to Calle, even though you don’t get to know Supergirl much in The Flash, she believes the film will serve as a jumping-off point for the character, who will be fleshed out in later films. Whether or not she will actually get to play Supergirl in those films, however, is an open question.

Previously, reports have spread that Sasha Calle’s version of Supergirl will be a one-off performance. These reports claim that Supergirl’s origin story in The Flash doesn’t match the origin story laid out by James Gunn when announcing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. A previously-planned spin-off film starring Calle was canceled after Gunn took over the franchise, lending credence to the idea that she will not appear in any future films.

However, considering that The Flash involves the titular character using time-travel and dimension-hopping shenanigans to completely rewrite the history of the universe, there’s pretty much no limit to what the end result of his meddling could be. It wouldn’t be entirely out of the realm of possibility for Sasha Calle’s Supergirl to end up with a different origin, or for a new, unrelated Supergirl to look exactly like Sasha Calle. It ultimately all depends on the success of The Flash, along with the whims of James Gunn and the rest of the Warner Bros. Discovery executives.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow isn’t scheduled to release until 2027, so it’ll likely be some time before we get any solid information about the movie’s cast. In fact, with the past few DC films underperforming, it’s entirely possible that the current plans for an extended DC universe might not become fully realized. It all depends on whether The Flash and the rest of the upcoming DC films avoid the effects of superhero fatigue that has recently been plaguing the industry.

Sasha Calle has remained tight-lipped about whether she’s spoken with anyone about continuing to play Supergirl in any upcoming films. Ultimately, only time will tell whether she will get to continue playing the role of her dreams.
