Sandra Bullock Is Burnt Out On Acting And Is Stepping Away
Sandra Bullock has stated that she is burnt out and is going to be stepping away from acting, which is fine considering she has held a fantastic career.
In the early 90s, the world received the gift of Sandra Bullock on screen in action movies like Speed and Demolition Man and dramas such as A Time to Kill and Practical Magic. By the 2000s, she was a bonified leading lady with films like Miss Congeniality and Crash. After 30 years of gracing the screen, Bullock found her way into the award-winning arena with The Blind Side and Gravity. With renown and accolades on her side, the 57-year-old actress may be calling it quits.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sandra Bullock revealed that she will step away from acting. The decision allows more time with her children (12-year-old son, Louis, and 10-year-old daughter Laila). According to Bullock, “I’m so burnt out. I’m so tired, and I’m so not capable of making healthy, smart decisions, and I know it.” She continues in the interview that she believed her steady work over the past three decades had become a crutch. Bullock was looking for validation in her career instead of finding it at home, where she knew it would be. She is deciding to focus on family instead, finding validation in her children and her husband, Bryan Randall, since 2015.
This isn’t the first time she commented about stepping away. In an earlier interview with Entertainment Tonight during the press tour for her latest film, The Lost City, Sandra Bullock said she had other places she wanted to be. During the interview, she confessed to taking her job as an actress, described as a 24/7 gig, very seriously. She instead wants to be 24/7 with her children and her family. She went so far as to describe her new job as “Servicing their every need” and their “Social calendar.” When The Hollywood Reporter asked how long her break from acting might be, her response was vague, “I really don’t know.”
If Sandra Bullock is finished with acting, she didn’t go out on a bad note. Her latest film, The Lost City, found a lot of love from audiences, scoring an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film brought in $187 million worldwide, making it the second-highest comedy of the pandemic return to theaters behind her former co-star, Ryan Reynold’s Free Guy. After back-to-back hits on Netflix in Bird Box and The Unforgivable, the actress was a welcome sight back to the big screen among fan favorites Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliff. And let’s not forget a very endearing cameo from the one and only Brad Pitt.
When a star as big as Sandra Bullock mentions the possibility of hanging it up, the question starts to form about legacy. She has done it all. Bullock made action, drama, comedy, and women’s empowerment. She won or received nominations for Academy Awards for The Blind Side and Gravity. The Blind Side won her a Golden Globe as well. The actress owns her own production studio, where she has served as the producer on 17 movies to go along with her nearly 60 appearances on screen. While we as an audience never want to see someone of Bullock’s caliber ride off into the sunset, she has nothing left to prove and could do so with a stellar career in the rearview. But what does that mean for the Bird Box sequel? Only time will tell.
