The Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock starrer The Proposal is still remembered for its lead cast’s supreme chemistry and its heart-melting scenes. But Bullock seems to remember the 2009 film for a very different reason–the awkwardness in the air while doing the naked scene in the film with Reynolds and the hard work she put in to not give in to the temptation to look at his “not little at all” erm…package.

Recently, Sandra Bullock appeared on Adam Ray’s podcast, About Last Night, and touched upon the topic of her decades-old friendship with the Deadpool star. The conversation eventually veered off to the 2009 film, which saw Bullock play the character of Margaret Tate, executive editor-in-chief of a New York book publishing company, who plots to get married to her employee, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) when faced with the prospect of being deported back to Canada. Initially sharing a strained relationship, the pair eventually realizes their true feelings for each other and gets together by the end of the film with one supremely romantic proposal scene.

But in this journey towards unearthing their actual feelings towards each other, there comes an awkward point where the duo have an encounter wherein they collide and fall while being naked. For the audience, this was one hilarious sequence, but Sandra Bullock has revealed how embarrassing it was for her and Ryan Reynolds to shoot the scene. She shared that even though they have known each other since they were kids and they had a closed set to film the scene, it wasn’t easy to remain comfortable.

“Ryan and I have known each other since we were pre-pubescent, I mean like, we go way, way, way, back. And we had to do the naked scene that day, and our director, Anne Fletcher, who’s just incredible… So we had a closed set, which means no one is allowed to be on there, just hair and makeup come in and fluff and hide. And Ryan and I have these flesh-colored things stuck to our privates, you know, my hair is strategically over the nipples. And Ryan’s little, not little, at all, it’s just whatever’s there, and I don’t know because I didn’t see it, [I] didn’t look, it’s protected and caressed and tucked in wherever it needs to be stuck,” Sandra Bullock shared.

The scene in The Proposal:

And it only got more embarrassing after they shot the scene, which ended with Ryan Reynolds on his back and Sandra Bullocks resting on his knees, waiting for the director to wrap up. But while she was restraining her wandering eyes to not sneak in a peek, the rest of the crew was busy teasing Reynolds as they were well aware of his unease.

“And then I hear Anne Fletcher from the darkness go, ‘Ryan, we can see your ball sack!’ I’m like, ‘Oh God, don’t look down, don’t look down! Because you want to look down. You’re like, ‘Should I help? No, I’m not helping’ … Everyone in the darkness spun around to see if they could find a monitor,” Sandra Bullock added.

Wow, so much planning, hard work, and major awkwardness were involved in shooting the small scene! And the efforts invested in making the film did pay off as while the film’s storyline was panned by critics, it sailed thanks to Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds’ excellent chemistry. The pair was majorly loved by the audience, thus allowing The Proposal to make more than $300 million at the box office on a budget of $40 million.

Despite their solid chemistry in The Proposal and their status as besties, Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock haven’t starred together in other projects since working on the film. They almost came close to sharing the screen together in the upcoming adventure-romantic comedy, Lost City of D. It was initially reported that Bullock and Reynolds were being eyed to star as the film’s lead protagonists but later Channing Tatum replaced the actor. Hopefully, the two friends will share the silver screen again sometime in the future after Bullock wraps up the numerous projects she is currently working on and Reynolds returns from his well-deserved break from shooting films.
