What do you get when you combine 90s boy band nostalgia, a relentless sense of humor, amazing tunes, and a track record of successful collaborations? You get Ryan Reynolds starring in a new comedy called Boy Band. You’re probably wondering if the Deadpool star will be able to take a page from the Backstreet Boy’s playbook and bust a move. The Hollywood Reporter gives us the skinny on production, scheduling, and maybe a little sneak peek at the subject matter. But we’re left guessing some of the major details, as this Paramount project is still in development.

Ryan Reynolds is once again collaborating with director Shawn Levy, who worked with the star on Free Guy, The Adam Project, and most recently Deadpool 3. It seems that the duo is a match made in heaven. When you find a creative partner, and your sense of humor clicks, it only makes sense to keep collaborating on projects while the creative well is still brimming with possibilities. Levy will of course be producing this project through his production company, 21 Laps Entertainment.

We don’t know how far in sync Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy are with this new project, but we know that nostalgia always sells, and enough time has passed since the 90s to tell us that there is definitely fertile ground in boy (and girl) band humor. A shining example of this kind of musical lampooning would be the comedy series Girls5eva on Peacock. The latter has a pretty simple premise: a girl band that only had one hit in the 90s has a chance at a reunion when their music gets rediscovered by a new generation. The comedy pretty much writes itself.

But will Ryan Reynolds, co-writer Jesse Andrews (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), and director Shawn Levy be able to put a new spin on this concept? It’s already been proven that there’s more than one direction that this project could be taken in. We’re hoping that Boy Band could be this generation’s Spinal Tap, but with less rock, and more pop! The only thing that’s holding these boys back is the unfortunate reality of scheduling.

It’s no mystery that Ryan Reynolds is a busy guy, but good things come to those who wait. If there’s one thing the Waiting… star knows how to do, it’s how to be prolific. If all goes according to plan, we can expect production for Boy Band to pick up in fall 2023, or early 2024.

Ryan Reynolds started his career acting on soap operas (Hillside) and sitcoms(Two Guys and a Girl) before becoming the megastar that he is today. Once he got into films, he has shown his dramatic range in pictures like Buried. But he loves to make us laugh with films like National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, and of course, Deadpool, which propelled his career to amazing heights.

With Boy Band, we hope to see more of the raunchy, in-your-face humor that Reynolds is known for. But even if he tones it down for Boy Band and lets the music do the talking, we know we’ll be laughing at whatever scenarios he gets himself into.
