Russell Crowe

While all eyes seem to be waiting for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is sometimes easy to forget that there is another massive movie coming in the Marvel franchise, one set to possibly begin wrapping up one of the original Avenger’s arcs while introducing a number of new characters. That’s going to be Thor: Love and Thunder which, among other things, will introduce Russell Crowe as Zeus.

With the first trailer for the movie dropping on Monday, we got our first look at the character and how he might wrap into the story. Check out the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer with Russell Crow appearing around the 0:50 second mark.

The Thor: Love and Thunder trailer is about 90 seconds of pure, heavy-metal goodness. Set to the tune of “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns N’ Roses, it brings us up to speed on what’s been happening with Thor since we left him at the end of Avengers: Endgame when he joined up with the Guardians of the Galaxy once again, setting off to galavant across the cosmos with that group. And in this trailer, we get to see at least a glimpse of Russell Crowe as Zeus, handling a massive lightning bolt and appearing to hold court over those in Mount Olympus.

While we don’t get to actually see his face, it looks like Russell Crowe will have at least some presence in this movie as Zeus. With a massive cast, the movie looks like it takes on a whirlwind with Chris Hemsworth as Thor trying to essentially “find himself” now that he’s no longer heading up Asgard and has to come to grips with his station in the universe. From the trailer, it looks fantastic in this sense, bringing us a journey through time and space, at some point landing him in the same space as another set of Gods, the Greek ones at least, with Russell Crowe overseeing that group. How the Greeks and Norse gods interact with each other is something that will play out in some part in Thor: Love and Thunder. Considering Thor is the Norse God of Thunder and Zeus is the Greek God of, well, lightning and thunder, there could be some friction here, to say the least.

In addition to Russell Crowe coming on board as Zeus, Thor: Love and Thunder will also bring on Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. There’s some chance that Russell Crow and Chris Hemsworth have to unite their powers to deal with this dude. That part isn’t totally clear. And at the end of the trailer, we are treated to the first look at Natalie Portman’s return as Jane Foster who will now take up the mantle of Mighty Thor.

Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Russell Crowe will be joined by other Marvel favorites in this one as well. The entirety of the Guardians of the Galaxy are back, highlighting the hilarious interplay between Thor and Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord. Tessa Thompson will be back as Valkyrie as well. Thor: Love and Thunder is set to hit screens this summer on July 8th. And we could be looking at one of Marvel’s best offerings yet.
