Robert Rodriguez could be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the latest rumors can be believed. There’s some scuttlebutt that the director is being targeted to helm the next Deadpool movie when it makes its way onto the Marvel lot. While this is far from confirmed, it does look like there could be conflicting opinions about who should take over the mantle for this next film.

Now, understand that these rumors are coming from a spot outside the typical rumor mill. This one was posted on Reddit after coming over from a thread on 4Chan which isn’t exactly a Hollywood trade publication. But this latest thread did have a number of very specific pieces of casting and directing rumors about a whole host of upcoming Marvel works. This latest one has Robert Rodriquez as the studio lead coming from Marvel to take over what will be the third movie in the Deadpool franchise, but the first since coming under the Disney umbrella.

What this rumor also details is that Robert Rodriguez might not be Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds’ first choice for the film. Apparently, the latter wants to bring on Free Guy director Shawn Levy. The two have just worked together on that film which will debut this May. That movie has a heavy action and comedic bent with Reynolds a side character in a video game world who goes about his day basically unaware of the weirdness of his surroundings. It looks hilarious and there’s a good chance the actor and director have a relationship that would bring good things over the Marvel side of things.

Whether this Robert Rodriguez in Deadpool rumor comes to fruition remains to be seen. Heck, there’s apparently still some undercurrents of indecision around just what kind of tact this next film will take in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The previous two films were decidedly R-rated, bloody, and graphic affairs that played excellently for Reynolds’ demeanor and the character as a whole. But they wouldn’t have fit within the current Marvel tone of productions. There have been some rumors of disagreements between Reynolds and his new studio around the shape of this third film and whether they can continue around their absurdly-graphic path.

Robert Rodriguez meanwhile has straddled this line in his career before. He has plenty of high-action, high-violence films like Machete, Planet Terror, and From Dusk Til Dawn which are rather no-holds-barred when it comes to taking a more graphic approach to on-screen blood and guts. But there’s also plenty of kid-friendly work in there as well with the Spy Kids franchise or trending a little more into all ages with Alita: Battle Angel. There’s some chance Marvel sees this as a near-perfect combination of skills to enter the universe for this Deadpool franchise. He might have just the right mix of movies on his resume to appeal to everyone involved.

Deadpool currently doesn’t have any set timeline for release. They are still working out some of the key players to be involved with the third film. Based on the success of the first two films, there’s a lot riding on this one to appeal to both longtime fans of the franchise and to those entrenched in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having someone like Robert Rodriguez come on would represent a major name in the industry who could help blend the two ideas.
