Parasite shocked the world by becoming the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2020. That historic feat has led to more recognition for films that don’t follow the traditional standards of Hollywood films. The director of the film, Bong Joon Ho is not slowing down after his historic win, as the cast for his upcoming feature is starting to take shape. On top of over landing Robert Pattinson for the lead role, it has been learned that Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Naomi Ackie are joining the picture as well. This is a huge cast that will hopefully lead to more award recognition for the South Korean director.

This new film is based on a novel called Mickey7, by Edward Ashton. The story follows a man who is sent to colonize an ice-filled planet called Niflheim. Whenever there is a high-risk mission, Mickey is sent to take on the dangers of these missions. The reason behind sending this man is that he can die and regenerate as a clone of himself with all his memories still intact. However, once the seventh iteration of Mickey is born, something odd happens, as he begins to understand his role in life and push back against it. Robert Pattinson is set to star as Mickey in the new film.

Bong Joon Ho is certainly taking a different approach to his new film, as his last endeavor was a foreign language and revolved around the twisted life of family and the con life. This new venture is completely involved in the sci-fi field. Though this is certainly a much different direction, this cast could lead to more Academy Award recognition. Robert Pattinson is certainly a big enough actor to drive forward a film on his own. Adding Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette to that cast list is certainly going to add some strong buzz around the film.

The growing consensus on how Bong Joon Ho creates his adaptations means that this film might only be loosely based on Mickey7, and not entirely follow the source material from the novel. Bong had received an unfinished manuscript of the novel in 2021 and became instantly enthralled by the story. He has reportedly been planning his next move in the industry very carefully, and this story is one that caught his attention immediately. Apart from Bong being an executive producer on the Parasite series that is being developed, he has not made any further films. This adaptation will be his first film in a few years. Adding Robert Pattinson to his first film back is certainly a big move.

The untitled adaptation of Mickey7 is only being put together, and there are no further details about the film’s production. Granted that casting announcements are taking place; it could mean that production will get underway quite soon. Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Naomi Akie are all part of this huge cast already. There could be even more big names added soon. Be on the lookout for details about this new Bong Joon Ho production in the coming weeks.
