Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr shocked the world when he showed up with a completely bald head, sparking controversy about why he decided to chop his great hair off. Well, the reason behind his drastic change might have just been revealed. RDJ was shown on the set of his new series, The Sympathizer, which has made the man look absolutely unrecognizable. The images of Downey on set, which you can see below, are likely going to cause much more drama than when he showed up completely bald.

We could be told that Robert Downey Jr is portraying James Caan in a biopic about the legendary actor’s life, and we would have certainly believed it. While the series is certainly not going to be about Caan, we can’t stop thinking about how identical RDJ looks to him. The plot for The Sympathizer follows a spy during the end of the Vietnam War, which could be why Robert Downey Jr looks so vastly different.

What we do know is that The Sympathizer is going to be produced by HBO and A24, and Robert Downey Jr is going to be portraying the villain in the series. Apparently, RDJ is going to be taking on multiple roles, every one of them meant to symbolize a part of the American establishment. Park Chan-wook is the creator of the series, and he is most known for Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, and The Handmaiden.

Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, and Sarah Oh are all joining Robert Downey Jr in this new seven-part series. It will follow the lives of many Vietnamese people who immigrated to Los Angeles after the end of the Vietnam War. RDJ has not often played the villain, so it is going to be interesting for him to take on a much different role in this new series.

The Sympathizer is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by author Viet Thanh Nguyen. Apparently, there had been a long search to secure the series regulars, Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, and Alan Tron, all of which are of Vietnamese descent. Xuande will be leading the cast as The Captain, who is a half-French and half-Vietnamese spy for the North Vietnamese, who finds himself in a refugee camp in Los Angeles.

We would imagine that The Captain is going to be running into the multiple characters that Robert Downey Jr is meant to portray in the new series. A24 is a media company that often produces some very compelling work, so we are excited to see this new A24 and HBO series.

The new Robert Downey Jr series does not have a release date just yet, but with it heavily into production right now, we could be seeing it sometime at the end of 2023. If not, we will at least see a trailer, and the new HBO espionage thriller in early 2024. We certainly want to hear what RDJ is going to sound like, because his new drastic costume looks like it could come with some sort of different-sounding accent.
