When it comes to superheroes, it seems like there’s no chance anytime soon that Marvel and DC will ever combine for a massive melding of properties. But that doesn’t mean that actors from both The Avengers and the Justice League couldn’t team up together in a different project. That just might be the case, as a new rumor suggests that Robert Downey Jr. wants to work with Henry Cavill on a future project.

Entertainment writer Daniel Richtman brings word that Iron Man and Superman could be teaming up, as Robert Downey Jr. wants to work on a film with Henry Cavill. However, this is just a rumor at this point, and Richtman doesn’t say who or where he has heard this rumor from.

Even if we should take this with a grain of salt, it is still exciting to consider a possible team-up between Robert Downey Jr. and Henry Cavill. The two both do phenomenal work and a movie starring both would be a pretty big deal. Downey Jr. made it so that Tony Stark really can’t be portrayed by anyone else, and Cavill made his mark on the DC mythos with a decent Superman performance.

It is actually kind of tricky to predict what kind of movie Robert Downey Jr. would want to star in alongside Henry Cavill. They both have tons of range and are enormous box office draws. Robert Downey Jr. defined a character for an entire generation, and Cavill breathed new life into a beloved DC hero. Both actors have even played Sherlock Holmes. If DC and Marvel are getting into multiverses, maybe Downey Jr.’s third Sherlock Holmes movie can meet Cavill’s version of the character from Enola Holmes.

While Henry Cavill may not be the best Superman we have ever had, but he does a bang-up job as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher. He also plays one heck of a villain in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. His other big roles include Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E, and Theseus in Immortals. Robert Downey Jr. has been a huge star for years now, but Cavill is quickly becoming as much of a household name as he is.

Since Avengers: Endgame killed Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr. has been relatively quiet. He starred in the disappointing Dolittle, and before that, Downey Jr.’s last starring role in a non-Marvel film was in 2014’s The Judge. The actor will reportedly appear as Iron Man in the upcoming Black Widow, and has wrapped filming Jamie Foxx’s directorial debut, All-Star Weekend, so it looks like we soon might finally get getting a whole lot more Downey Jr.

Again, take this rumor with a grain – or maybe even a heap – of salt. If you want to catch up on some fun Henry Cavill performances, revisit him in the DC films and be sure to catch him in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. If you are more of a Robert Downey Jr. fan, though, just rewatch all of his Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. His character may be dead in that universe, but that doesn’t for a second mean that he can’t come back in some way.
