Rob Lowe’s latest movie was launched on Netflix only a few days ago and is already #1 in many countries, including the United States. Dog Gone, the heartwarming true story of the urgent search for a dog with a condition that requires periodic but life-saving treatment has struck a chord with audiences and is leading the streamer’s “movies” selection, beating such anticipated films as Glass Onion and The Pale Blue Eye. Flix Patrol provides the context of the movie having worldwide appeal, placing first in countries as varied as Uruguay, Thailand, South Africa, and Hungary.

Dog Gone is about Gonker, the canine friend of the socially awkward Fielding Marshall, who is played by relative newcomer Johnny Berchtold. Fielding adopts the dog and befriends him, finding him a positive influence in his life despite the concerns of Fielding’s father John, Rob Lowe’s role in the film. Gonker is diagnosed with Addison’s disease, a condition that requires him to have a shot every month, and Fielding ensures that his companion receives this life-saving medicine.

However, during a trek on a hiking trail, Gonker runs off after some local wildlife and disappears. Fielding, John, and mother Ginny come together to find the lost pup before it is time for his next shot, propelling the story to national headlines. Joining Rob Lowe and Johnny Berchtold in the cast is Kimberley Williams-Paisley as Ginny, whose childhood experiences of losing a dog of her own compel her to go to great lengths to help Fielding find Gonker.

While the family is united in their mission to find Gonker, the story focuses on the turbulent relationship between John and Fielding. Rob Lowe’s character is worried about his son’s future, as Fielding may have finished college but is still aimless and uncommitted. As the search for Gonker intensifies, father and son must face what is truly important in their lives.

The movie was directed by Stephen Herek and based on the book Dog Gone: A Lost Pet’s Extraordinary Journey and the Family Who Brought Him Home, which was written by Pauls Toutonghi, based on a true story. In addition to starring in the movie, Rob Lowe produced for the film, alongside writer Nick Santora, who adapted the book into a screenplay. Netflix released the movie on January 13, 2023.

In just a few short days, Dog Gone has shot to #1 on Netflix’s views list, despite having negative to middling reviews from critics. It has a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 39 from Metacritic, but audiences seem to enjoy it more as 66% gave it a favorable rating. Plus, it has the distinction of being #1 in so many countries, showing once again that audiences and critics don’t always agree.

Rob Lowe’s long and distinguished career started in the early 1980s when he was cast in almost every popular teen movie of the era, and as he gracefully aged, so did his roles. In addition to Dog Gone, he is currently starring in the Fox television show 9-1-1: Lone Star. Catch Dog Gone on Netflix and see what audiences have been panting about.
