Uma Thurman in Kill Bill

Quentin Tarantino is famous for two things: loving women’s feet (just go ask Margot Robbie) and making some of the most unforgettable films in Hollywood history. Pulp Fiction helped transform Samuel L. Jackson into a household name, and the Kill Bill movies showed us a side of Uma Thurman we had never seen: unrelenting action badass. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Lionsgate has secured the distribution rights to three Tarantino classics (Kill Bill: Volume I and Volume II and Jackie Brown) and will be re-releasing those films, including a remastered 4K release of the two Kill Bill films.

In terms of major Hollywood studios, Lionsgate is most certainly the biggest fan of Quentin Tarantino. With the most recent acquisition, Lionsgate now has the rights to eight of Tarantino’s films, including his breakout crime film Reservoir Dogs, gonzo World War II film Inglourious Basterds, and his cowboy period piece Django Unchained. Each of these movies has a rightful place among the best greatest motion pictures ever made (certainly better than most of what Marvel is putting out), and it’s frankly exciting that Lionsgate will do its best to make sure a new generation discovers what makes Tarantino such a powerful and provocative director.

And for at least two of Quentin Tarantino’s movies, Lionsgate is working to make sure they look better than ever before. The Kill Bill films are technically separate movies, but they combine to tell an epic story of an assassin-turned-bride who is betrayed by both her former lover and former team and ultimately goes on a bloody (and boy, do we mean bloody) rampage of revenge. October will mark the 20th anniversary of the first Kill Bill: Volume 1, and Lionsgate is releasing a remastered 4K version of both films by the end of the year, though exact details on everything from the specific release date to extra features have not yet been confirmed.

Pam Grier in Jackie Brown

Do you like the idea of watching Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill movies in 4K, but you’re not a big fan of physical media? Here’s some good news: right now, Apple is running a sale on iTunes where you can buy both films in their current versions for $4.99 each. Historically, Apple upgrades your HD iTunes purchases to 4K automatically, so this could be your chance to eventually get 4K versions of both movies as well as any extra features for less than $10 before tax.

For all the love that Kill Bill is getting (and rightfully so), we sincerely hope that Lionsgate does its best to introduce more people to Jackie Brown. This film starring the iconic Pam Grier as the titular character is often overlooked by audiences drawn to the more bombastic thrills of films like Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds. However, many who make the time to watch Jackie Brown consider it Tarantino’s finest film, and Lionsgate now has a chance to turn this cult classic into the mainstream hit that it should have been in the first place.

As for Quentin Tarantino, the veteran director is likely less interested in focusing on his past than focusing on his future. Right now, the director is hard at work on The Movie Critic, a film that he has claimed will be his last movie. He doesn’t yet have a studio partner yet, but it’s a safe bet that Lionsgate will jump at the opportunity to help bring Tarantino’s final film to life.
