As if fans didn’t have enough to be excited about with the release of the upcoming Matrix 4 after almost 20 years, the film seems to have confirmed that Priyanka Chopra’s character is actually an adult version of someone viewers met in the original trilogy. According to ScreenRant, newly released images teasing the film reveal a long-held fan theory that Chopra is playing a grown-up version of the character Sati, who played a minor but important role in The Matrix Revolutions

This would seemingly confirm rumors first sparked by Den of Geek, which noticed a Korean character poster for Priyanka Chopra’s character was labeled as Sati. However, it was largely expected that’s who she was playing after she sported a similar haircut in the trailer for the movie, where she is seen handing Keanu Reeves’ Neo a copy of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The book holds a special significance to the franchise as it was initially used in the first Matrix film as a metaphor for Neo’s character waking up to the fact that the world around him is not real and that he was destined to become the savior of a humanity that had almost lost a war with machines. You can see the images of Chopra as Sati below.

For those who need a refresher, Sati was first introduced to the audience and the franchise’s protagonist, Neo, when he was at Mobil Avenue after the events of The Matrix Reloaded. The space is designed as a kind of limbo for programs that aren’t welcome in The Matrix. Sati is there with her father Rama-Kandra and mother Kamala. They both design programs for The Matrix but went a little rogue and decided to create a daughter out of love — a concept that Neo first found shocking for machines to have. However, it seems that Sati’s parents made a deal with The Frenchman to smuggle Sati into The Matrix despite there being a directive against any beings that don’t have a specific purpose.

The Oracle, though, believes Sati will hold a very special purpose one day but does not specify what it is. However, after everyone, including Sati, is assimilated by Mr. Smith, she returns at the end of the movie when everyone was reloaded and reveals she created a sunset for Neo. So, the little kid has powers that will likely only have gotten stronger when Priyanka Chopra returns as an adult Sati.

Priyanka Chopra is not the only character from the originals that has been recast to fit in with the modern-day. Yahya Abdul-Marteen II has been tapped to play Morpheus in the film after Laurence Fishburne noted that he was not invited back to reprise his role as the iconic man who united humanity outside the Matrix and led the charge of busting Neo out of it. It’s unclear how the movie will explain the fact that he’s a completely new man, but when it comes to The Matrix, playing fast and loose with reality is kind of par for the course. That’s not to say that there aren’t a handful of people reprising their original roles from the franchise. In addition to Keanu Reeves, fans can look forward to more from Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity as well as Lambert Wilson’s The Merovingian, Daniel Bernhardt’s Agent Johnson and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Niobe.
