Powerpuff Girls seems like an unlikely hit cartoon, a story about three kindergarten-aged girls with extraordinary powers. But it lasted for six seasons on Cartoon Network and had more than its share of accolades over the years. Though it hasn’t been on for about three years now, the show still has some staying power in the public consciousness and that means we are going to see a reboot. But this time it won’t be in animated form. No, Powderpuff Girls is getting a live-action remake on the CW.

Now before you think you are getting a casting of some five-year-olds as the trio of main characters, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, think again. In this live-action version of Powerpuff Girls, apparently, we are going to catch up with the girls when they are well into their 20s. The show will focus on them reflecting back on their time spent saving the world when they were mere tots. This has tons of comedic potential and seems like the perfect way to take the characters considering the show’s original fans are likely aging into this demographic right now.

Powerpuff Girls, in its original version, lasted six seasons on the Cartoon Network and was created and developed by Craig McKracken. It focused on the titular group as they fought crime in their hometown using a variety of superpowers but also had to navigate the vagaries of time as a kindergartner. The show earned multiple awards and nominations including the two-time winner of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation.

After leaving Cartoon Network in 2010, Powerpuff Girls was picked back up in 2016 for another three-season run. The last episode of this reboot aired on June 16, 2019. This live-action remake rumor had been hanging around for the last few months, but this confirmation solidifies it.

The new show on the CW will have a strong creative backbone with Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody on board. Degnier has multiple television producer and writer credits with Veronica Mars, SMILF, and Sleepy Hollow. Meanwhile, Cody’s writing credits need almost no introduction with movies like Juno, Young Adult, and Tully to name a few.

Powerpuff Girls will also be produced by Greg Berlanti. He’s been a staple of the CW and its other iterations for years and most recently has been fully developing the Arrowverse franchise as well as the Titansverse. It’s unclear if this latest show will be part of those superhero lineups or exists within the shared worlds. Considering there’s a definitive superhero element, and it’s on the same network, there’s at least some chance it will dovetail with some of those other stories at some point.

With Powerpuff Girls joining the CW’s 2021-2022 lineup which could have it actually hitting the air this coming fall. That’s simply speculation but the timing would line up. I’m sure we will hear casting news in due time about this show which is such a cool direction to take the popular cartoon.
