Summer Game Fest has been providing gamers with many exciting announcements, including a new look at the hotly anticipated The Last of Us TV show from HBO. The first look shows Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in character as Joel and Ellie, hiding from one of the series’ fearsome infected. Check out the image in the Tweet from Naughty Dog below:
Along with Uncharted and Crash Bandicoot, The Last of Us is one of the most beloved game series by developer Naughty Dog. The first game, in particular, is held in especially high regard. The game depicts a post-apocalyptic world where people become infected by Cordyceps fungi, turning them into grotesque and hostile creatures. Joel, portrayed by Troy Baker in the games and Pedro Pascal in the upcoming series, is tasked with escorting a young girl named Ellie, played by Ashley Johnson in the games, and Bella Ramsey in the upcoming series, across the desolate United States. The game has a sequel, The Last of Us Part II, where players take control of Ellie instead of Joel. The sequel was critically lauded but divisive amongst players for some of the narrative beats.
The popularity of the games led to the eventual greenlight of the HBO series, which fans have been dying to get a real glimpse of. While this image isn’t a lot to go off of, it is cool to see Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in character. It definitely seems like they’re hiding from an Infected, most likely a Clicker. Clickers are some of the creepiest enemies in the games, as their heads have become so mutated by the Cordyceps fungus that they can’t see anymore, only hear. You have to be extra quiet if you want to get around them or go in for a stealth kill. Clickers are sure to create quite a bit of tension in the upcoming game.
The HBO series will be following the events of the first game. Those who haven’t played The Last of Us and are wanting to experience it in the best way possible are in luck, as it was recently announced that Naughty Dog is releasing a full remake. The original game certainly stands up, but it was released on the PS3. This means the graphics and gameplay mechanics are a little dated by modern standards, especially compared to the phenomenal graphics and gameplay found in the sequel. While the game was remastered for the PS4, it was mostly just a graphical update. This remake will be built from the ground up to overhaul the graphics and the gameplay to provide an immersive experience equivalent to The Last of Us Part II.
The Last of Us Part I, as the remake has been retitled, is expected to release for the PS5 on September 2, 2022. This should be perfect timing, as the Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey-starring series should be hitting HBO sometime in 2023. We’ll likely get more insight into the show on “The Last of Us day,” which is September 26, the same day that the outbreak began in The Last of Us universe.
