Pedro Pascal is having a prolific run in 2023 already. Turning heads with his performance in the HBO series The Last of Us, he may be turning heads for another reason. In a recent interview with Comic Book, Pascal mentioned the strange reason for his pick for his favorite Star Wars movie, as he stated: “I would say it’s because of the Ewoks,” when asked about why Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was his favorite in the franchise.

Pascal has long been a Star Wars fan: “There had to have been a re-release of the first one because I feel like I saw it in the movie theater. I was traumatized by the trash compactor,” Pascal notes about watching it for the first time. “I distinctly remember [Star Wars: The] Empire Strikes Back and finally getting tickets to Return of the Jedi, which, if I was being honest, is my favorite one, and it’s like we’re not allowed to admit it.”

The Ewoks were a hotly contested addition to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, with many fans feeling like their cuddly appearance diminished the intensity of the action sequences within the film.

On becoming part of the Star Wars Universe, Pascal remarked “It’s crazy. It’s so strange because it’s something so imprinted on your childhood and now you’re a part of it and it’s a very surreal and big thing that I’m proud of.”

Pedro Pascal is not the only Star Wars fan having this debate, as the debate over the best and worst films within the franchise is a favorite pastime of many Star Wars fans. There has been a resurgence in praise for the 90s trilogy as nostalgia starts to creep in for millennial-aged viewers who remember growing up watching it, despite it at the time being lambasted by Star Wars purists who thought that it didn’t hold up to the original trilogy. The most recent trilogy received a similar amount of criticism, with fans of the second trilogy and the first both finding various faults.

In reality, the continuation and expansion of the Star Wars Universe have meant more additions to the lore, many of them welcome surprises that have complicated the discussion.

One of the most pleasant surprises has been the success of Pedro Pascal’s own entry into the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian, which introduced us to Din Djarin “The Mandalorian” and the fan-favorite Grogu who fans were quick to dub “Baby Yoda” for his resemblance to the Jedi Master. The Pedro Pascal-led Disney+ series has expanded its scope over the course of its two seasons, and the characters even weaved their way into the 2022 series The Book of Boba Fett, which in many ways acted as a spinoff of the Mandalorian series. Season Three of The Mandalorian arrives on March 1st, 2023.

Pedro Pascal has been on a roll recently with fans tuning in in droves to watch him in the survival sci-fi drama The Last of Us in which he stars. The series has been one of the first breakout hits of 2023 and is based on the PlayStation 3 video game of the same name.

The first time that many fans encountered Pedro Pascal was when he portrayed Oberyn Martell in the fourth season of the hit HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. What fans may not realize is that Pascal has been acting since 1996. He had minor roles in television shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Good Wife, and Homeland.

Pedro Pascal has become one of Hollywood’s most charming heartthrobs, and one that fans will be seeing a lot of in 2023. Regardless of whether readers agree with his hot take about the best film in the Star Wars franchise, it’s hard to deny that he has become one of the hottest commodities in Hollywood.
