Fans Of DC’s Peacemaker Series Crushed After James Gunn Reveals Really Bad News

Peacemaker season 2 is being de-prioritized in favor of Superman: Legacy and Waller.

Peacemaker fans were recently disappointed when DC Studios head James Gunn announced via Twitter that the promised second season of the show was being delayed to prioritize multiple other projects. Specifically, in response to Twitter user @Cesar71295305 asking him if Peacemaker season 2 had been canceled (which in itself was a reply to Gunn’s Valentine’s Day post featuring the character’s feathered sidekick Eagly), James Gunn revealed that it was being postponed while he worked on the Superman: Legacy film and the Waller television series.

Fans of Peacemaker likely did not have much to worry about. The show was one of James Gunn’s first forays into the world of DC, following his soft reboot of The Suicide Squad in 2021. After what felt like years of chaos within the DCEU, the John Cena-starring comedy-drama was both massively popular and critically acclaimed, currently holding a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. If there was any property from before the dual ascension of James Gunn and Peter Safran to co-heads of DC Studios that would remain on the slate, it would likely be this one.

However, it cannot be denied that the transition from DC Extended Universe to DC Universe under James Gunn has resulted in some casualties. While John Cena’s Peacemaker (and presumably, his beloved Eagly) will be eventually returning, it seems that Henry Cavill’s Superman, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, and possibly Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman are all out. We will have to wait to see the box office grosses of The Flash to see what becomes of the ever-controversial Ezra Miller (not to mention two of three of the current Batmans).

It probably did not help things for Peacemaker fans that James Gunn recently announced a list of the projects that DC Studios was currently working on, with the ultraviolent vigilante’s show not being on the docket. According to Gunn, the list was half of a shared universe story arc dubbed “Gods and Monsters;” as the entire arc is supposed to take eight to ten years to tell, it would seem that Peacemaker season 2 is in the back half.

Gods and Monsters is reported to be kicking off with a reboot titled Superman: Legacy. Gunn has already stated that this film will one, not star Henry Cavill, and two, not be an origin story for the Kryptonian superhero. After that, it seems the next priority at the moment is Waller, a live-action HBO Max focusing on the Suicide Squad’s ruthless coordinator Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).

It may actually make more sense for Peacemaker to be kicked down the road, particularly if the title character finds himself “volunteered” back into service with the Suicide Squad. Depending on what happens in Waller, fans might find a whole new storyline for John Cena (especially as Gunn has frequently displayed his lack of qualms when it comes to killing off characters). Disappointing as it may be, it is clear that Peacemaker is just not a priority right now.
