Paul Bettany saw his life get snuffed out as Vision in Avengers: Infinity War. It was a brutal death that seemed to signal the definitive end of the character. However, we all know that he is back up and running in WandaVision. Fans have been fervently speculating exactly how this revival has taken place? Was it just an illusory construct created by Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch? Or had she discovered some way to bring him back to life without the use of the Mind Stone? Well, the newest episode of WandaVision has revealed how Paul Bettany’s Vision is back and it might be one of the most horrifying moments in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After the revelation that Wanda herself is creating the strange sitcom dimension we have seen in WandaVision, Paul Bettany comes back into the picture. Vision is shrouded in shadow and out of focus in the background. It is not immediately clear that the episode is trying to obscure him, but then Wanda turns around to face Vision and we see what is arguably the scariest image we have ever seen in a Marvel Cinematic Universe project.

We see Paul Bettany as Vision and we realize that Wanda is reanimating his actual corpse. Just look at this genuinely chilling image where we see what Vision actually looks like now:

Talk about creepy! Paul Bettany’s dead eyes, grey skin, and giant wound from where Thanos ripped out the Mind Stone that gave Vision life all come together to create what is effectively a zombie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And the fact that Wanda is using her powers to reanimate the dead body of her lover adds another twisted layer to her descent into villainy. there is no doubt that this is one of the most shocking and distressing moments we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it adds a whole new mountain of questions about what is going on in WandaVision.

One of those is how much Paul Bettany’s character has control over his own actions. Vision seems to be able of independent thought. We have seen him questioning exactly what is going on with the world he seems to find himself in. It is not like Wanda is directly controlling his actions. However, we have seen her affect time in order to erase or cloud those inquiries from Vision. Is his personality and “soul” able to exist outside the frame of the Mind Stone? If so, is there a possibility of actually reviving him? Or is this strange zombie version the only way Wanda has found to bring him back to life? And once Vision realizes what is going on, how is he going to react to being a walking synthezoid corpse?

Now that we know how Paul Bettany is back as Vision, it has only added to the horror of what is going on in WandaVision. Will the series end with Vision choosing to remain dead? Or could there be the possibility of him being revived in a better way? No matter what, this jaw-dropping moment has answered one of the biggest questions at the center of WandaVision. Now, we have to see where this answer leads us.
