It’s been a minute since Marvel Studios’ Eternals introduced audiences to some of the lesser-known characters from their comics. Along with the Eternals, an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created sentient life on Earth, viewers got to meet a new character voiced by Patton Oswalt. During the Eternals mid-credits scene, Patton Oswalt appeared as Pip the Troll, who introduced Eros (Thanos’ brother played by Harry Styles) to Thena, Druig, and Makkari. Now, the Emmy-winning comedian has shared photos of himself bringing the Marvel character to life through motion capture.

Below are photos of Patton Oswalt making the Marvel magic happen.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.comEternals’ visual effects supervisor Matt Aitken revealed that Patton Oswalt did so much more than lend his voice to Pip. The AP Bio star was on the sound stage acting everything out by himself. He also performed each scene while on his knees so the team had the right height for Pip.

Created by Jim Starlin, Pip the Troll (played by Patton Oswalt) made his Marvel comics debut in 1975’s Strange Tales Vol 2 #179 as a comic foil to the story’s protagonist, Adam Warlock. Over the years he returned in various roles as an ally to Warlock and the Avengers. But for Marvel’s Eternals, he appears alongside Eros/Starfox, played by Harry Styles.

Also created by Jim Starlin, Eros is depicted as a member of the Eternals in the comics. He was born on Titan where he is the son of Mentor. While Eros serves as the superhero Starfox, he is opposed by his mad brother Thanos, much like the rest of the universe. Starfox has the power to psychically control other people’s emotions. In comic book lore, he has been a member of the Avengers and Dark Guardians.

Given the epic setup with Pip the Troll and Eros in Eternals, it is very likely that we will be seeing Patton Oswalt and Harry Styles reprise their roles sometime in the future. Whether or not it’s through an official sequel or another big Marvel Studios movie or series remains to be seen. But the introduction of those two characters is definitely intriguing.

While we wait for news about Patton Oswalt’s return, you can catch his debut in Eternals which is now playing theaters. The 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was directed by Chloé Zhao who wrote the screenplay with Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo. The film stars an ensemble cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie. Harry Styles and Patton Oswalt also appear.

The epic Marvel story is set when the return of half the population in Avengers: Endgame ignites “the emergence”. This means, the Eternals – an immortal alien race created by the Celestials who have secretly lived on Earth for over 7,000 years – have to reunite to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants. Meanwhile, the rest of Marvel’s 2021 line-up includes Hawkeye, which premieres on Disney+ on November 24th, and Spider-Man: No Way Home which hits theaters on December 17th.
