The second season of Star Trek: Picard ended with some pretty big revelations and tragic twists. For the longest time, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) blamed his father for his mother’s disappearance. But in the finale, he rediscovered a sad memory that he had blocked out. His mother struggled with mental health issues and ultimately committed suicide – something Picard has felt guilty about his entire life.

Now that season is over, the veteran Star Trek actor revealed what the dark development of his character meant to him. And the scene which brought him to tears. Speaking to Variety, Patrick Stewart said mental health has been at the forefront of the show this season because it was important to look into for his character to move forward. Linking it to his own life, he said it was something that had been on his mind for a long time. “I knew that there had been some kind of trauma. There had been hints and suggestions,” he told the publication.

Although unpacking all that baggage was quite taxing, the moment that really got to Patrick Stewart was saying goodbye to John de Lancie’s Q and Alison Pill’s Agnes. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he recalled watching the episode for the first time and being deeply moved by his scenes with de Lancie. Especially since his co-star was making the character so vulnerable. “John can bring complexity to the simplest line. I mean that as a compliment. I’m envious,” he told the publication. “His whole attitude and the things he was saying and his gentleness and sensitivity, it choked me up.”

Then came the moment when the new Borg Queen took off her mask. According to Patrick Stewart, the way the camera created a curious angle shot, rather low into her face, looking up into her eyes, was so touching, that he began to weep. Because it also meant that he was saying goodbye to John and Alison, who are wonderful actors. He added, that since it was Pill’s last time on the series, what she did with the character in those last moments was very moving.

Patrick Stewart is currently preparing for the release of Star Trek: Picard’s third and final season which will debut on Paramount+ in early 2023. The story will follow the space adventures of Jean-Luc Picard as he is reunited with the former crew of the USS Enterprise. Producers had always planned for the show to end after the third season. Because that was all the time, they needed to reach a satisfying conclusion to Picard’s story. As such, several cast members from Next Generation will be joining the show for season three. This includes fan favorites like LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner.

So far, fans and critics seem to agree with the direction of the story. The Patrick Stewart-led series currently holds an 85% approval rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. While the website’s critical consensus says the series Picard gets some backup expertly charts a course towards recapturing more of the classical Star Trek spirit that everyone loves.
