Patrick Stewart X-Men Professor X

With all the rumors surrounding both the third Spider-Man film and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, it seems like any character from any previous Marvel film is currently on the table. As rumors fly that we could soon be seeing multiple Spider-Men, Blade, characters from the Netflix Marvel shows, and others appearing in the next phase, it only seems fitting that there are now rumors of old X-Men characters popping up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, there’s a new rumor suggesting Patrick Stewart might appear as Professor X once more.

This rumor comes from We Got This Covered, which says that Patrick Stewart is in talks to reprise his role of Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It’s no secret that Stewart has had discussions with Kevin Feige about returning, but just a few weeks ago, Stewart even stated that doing Logan changed his opinion on returning to the role. According to this rumor, however, Feige must have convinced Stewart to come back, although from what Stewart has said, this doesn’t seem likely.

Patrick Stewart played Professor X in seven different X-Men films, starting with 2000’s X-Men, and ending with 2017’s Logan. It seems as though for both Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman, Logan was their sendoff to their X-Men characters, especially since both characters died at the end of the film. But considering Logan takes place several years into the future, it’s possible Feige could have found a suitable way to introduce Professor X without messing up the timeline. Plus, it wouldn’t be the first time the X-Men have messed around with the timeline or brought Professor X back to life.

Back in 2019, Kevin Feige said that it will be “a very long time” before the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness doesn’t come out until 2022, three years isn’t exactly a long time. It also seems like Marvel is holding off a bit with the X-Men, instead, seemingly focusing on reintroducing other known characters into this universe. Mahershala Ali’s Blade film is currently scheduled for Phase Five, while Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home director Jon Watts is already signed on for Fantastic Four. A Patrick Stewart cameo would be fun, but it doesn’t exactly seem like Marvel is ready for the mutants to join this universe quite yet.

But Marvel is keeping extremely tight-lipped about who they do have planned for how they will unveil the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Either casting is far off into the future, or they haven’t even begun deciding who will play their new version of Professor X and Magneto, amongst others. But considering how twisty and convoluted the X-Men had become before Disney purchased Fox, it seems like any cameos from old X-Men characters – even Patrick Stewart as Professor X – would only add to confusion for these newly-introduced characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It would be great to see Stewart again as Professor X, but according to Stewart, it doesn’t seem likely to happen.
