Could the ultimate Jedi/Sith showdown be on the way in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series finale on Wednesday, June 22? In the first five episodes of the Disney+ limited series, fans have been offered a teasing clash between Ewan McGregor’s titular Jedi Knight and Hayden Christensen’s Sith Lord. However, The Direct reports a theory that suggests a titanic season finale showdown will occur in a suitable location, Mustafar.

Mustafar is of course the setting of one of the grandest lightsaber duels in Star Wars history. Following the gut-wrenching events of Order 66, which saw the Jedi Order wiped out by Clone Troopers in Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi tracks down his former protege Anakin Skywalker on the volcanic planet of Mustafar. By this point of course, Skywalker has transformed into Darth Vader, and he and Kenobi engage in a brutal battle, with Kenobi ending up the victor, injuring Vader to such an extent that he requires the iconic suit that all Star Wars fans have come to know and love. The Mustafar theory comes from Disney+Hotstar‘s Instagram account, which The Direct noted had posted a fan art image (created by Render Driver of Kenobi and Vader duelling on Mustafar in anticipation of the Obi-Wan Kenobi season finale.

Whilst it is indeed a fan-art image that has prompted Disney+ Hotstar and The Direct to theorise that Obi-Wan Kenobi will conclude with a rematch on Mustafar, it is not a far-fetched theory. The Direct has indeed reported previously that a sizzle-reel from Dinsey featured concept art depicting a new Obi-Wan/Vader clash on the volcanic planet. Given the importance that location played in Revenge of the Sith, it would certainly be a fitting location for what LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy has previously referred to as “the rematch of the century,” as per comicbook.com‘s report, which also features Mustafar concept art.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Vader have come to blows in this latest of the Star Wars Disney+ series. The pair had a coming together in episode three of the Deborah Chow-directed series, but Ewan McGregor’s Jedi Knight was no match for his former apprentice (with shades of “now I am the master” from Vader). Also, should Vader and Kenobi come to blows in the season finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi, (which is likely given that both parties are keen on destroying one another) and should the location indeed be Mustafar, it would not be the first time that the planet has been seen in live-action Star Wars since the 2005 release of Revenge of the Sith. Mustafar was previously featured in 2016s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and very much appeared to be Darth Vader’s permanent residence.

Wherever the final showdown in Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place, it is sure to be enthralling and hopefully brings the show to a fitting resolution. Episode five of the limited series left a lot of questions to be answered, with the fate of Moses Ingram’s Third Sister hanging in the balance, and with it the knowledge of Luke and Leia’s true parentage under threat of being exposed. Could this be the start of how Vader learns of his son Luke, thus foreshadowing the most iconic bombshell in cinema history (“no, I am your father”) and will this be the end of Ewan McGregor’s time as Obi-Wan, or is a second series on the cards for one of Dinsey+’s biggest hits?
