Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2: Will It Happen?
Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 has not been officially announced by Disney but Ewan McGregor has said he wants it to happen.
Ever since we got the reunion between Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in the Disney+ hit series, Star Wars fans have been champing at the bit, wondering if they would see Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2.
Unfortunately, the final answer to that question remains in limbo, although if you ask anyone involved in season 1, they will tell you to a person they are more than willing to make an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2. Yes, even Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor, himself.
Ewan McGregor Says He Wants An Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2
When the star of a series comes right out and says he is ready for more, one would hope those in charge would be listening. Sadly, Disney does not work that way. But it didn’t stop Ewan McGregor from stepping up to the microphone and announcing to all in attendance at the Celebrity Fan Fest in August that he was ready for another go-around as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Much to fans’ delight, this is what McGregor had to say. “I’m totally up for it guys, I wanna do it,” he said before splashing a dose of cold water on his, and fans’ wants. “I’m absolutely honest, there is no plan to make one yet.”
Then McGregor offered some hope by saying, “But I think, I’m pretty sure they’re just biding their time. But nobody’s approached me as of yet.” Of course, there is always the sleight of hand many actors are known for, either unable or unwilling to make the big announcement until the time is right but knowing full and well exactly where the future lies.
This could easily be the case with a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi. There has to be a plan moving forward with the Star Wars franchise, doesn’t there? Heck, who are we fooling, we just got finished with the “well-planned out” Star Wars sequels, so maybe we are giving them more credit than they deserve.
Kathleen Kennedy Offers The Latest Update On Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2
Kathleen Kennedy was full of juicy tidbits of information after the Star Wars Celebration in London last month. One of her key offerings came when she spoke about the possibility of a second season of the hit Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. While her answer was not what fans wanted to hear, she did leave open the possibility for more.
“That is not an active development,” she told Variety. “But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another. Everybody’s all hands on deck with what we’re doing right now, as you can see by what we showed everybody [at the Celebration]. We’ll turn our attention to that again maybe down the road.”
Not only did Kennedy offer her take on a second season of Obi-Wan, but she also offered a few updates on properties already in the works. First, she divulged the conversation she had with Daisy Ridley about moving forward with a feature centered around Ridley’s Rey. “It was a pretty straightforward phone call,” she explained. “I started out by just saying, ‘Hey, I think we’re getting near being ready.’ We’ve been talking a lot about what we’re doing in the movie space and I said, ‘I think we’re getting close to being ready. How would you like to go to Celebration?’ That was really the beginning of it. She was out of her mind excited.”
She then updated fans on the talks she continues to have with Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi, both of whom are working on their own Star Wars projects. Of Johnson’s potential new Star Wars trilogy, she said, “Rian and I talk all the time. He is unbelievably busy. So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of the ‘Glass Onion’ movies and then God knows what else. But he really wants to step back into the space. It’s a big commitment of time, so that’s really on him.”
Waititi is also working on a Star Wars project, though his is a stand-alone feature. “Taika is still working away,” she said. “He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 Plot Has Not Been Determined
The big question, if Disney finally decides to green light an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, is where does Ben Kenobi go next? According to those involved, Obi-Wan Kenobi season 1 was designed as a one-off. Even though McGregor is fully on board with a season 2 and Christensen also said (and we’ll get more into him in a bit) that “I would love to continue with this character. You know, I think there’s certainly more there to explore, and I would be so excited to get to do so,” just where would these characters go?
Those running the Star Wars universe have been trying to move away from the Skywalkers. Since season 1 was about Princess Leia and Darth Vader, an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 could move fans away from the Skywalkers and send our favorite Jedi Master to places unknown. This doesn’t mean McGregor and Christensen couldn’t reunite one more time, it just means it could be under vastly different circumstances.
Obi-Wan Director Deborah Chow Wants A Second Season
With both McGregor and Christensen ready for an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, Deborah Chow (who directed all six season 1 episodes) also says she is ready for more. She started off by telling Radio Times how season 1 was conceived. “You know, we always did conceive of this as a limited series,” she said. “So, it’s not an adventure-of-the-week sort of story. It’s one big story with a beginning, middle, and end. So, I think this story was very much conceived to be its own standalone.”
Then Chow went on to talk about the possibility of more. “I mean, there are of course more stories that you could tell. There’s obviously another 10 years before we get to A New Hope and with a character like Obi-Wan Kenobi, I think even just watching him ride across the sand sometimes is interesting. So, who knows? It’s hard to say right now, but it was not the intention.”
In fact, at the time of Chow’s chat with Radio Times, she was only interested in one thing – a getaway. As she explained, “Honestly, at this point, the only thing I’m thinking about is taking vacation. I haven’t gotten there. I can’t even conceive of it yet. I just need to actually finish the show to get there first.”
Then there are the unproven rumors about how season 1 changed direction based on the great numbers it was receiving. Apparently, the numbers made those in charge so happy that rewrites happened in order to keep Inquisitor Reva, the Third Sister (Moses Ingram), alive on the chance that season two would get greenlit. Reva would definitely be a nice addition to a possible Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 Would Be On Disney+
This is huge speculation on our part, especially since there is no word on an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, so take it with a grain of salt. The first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi started shooting in early May 2021 and finally premiered around 13 months later on Disney+.
So, if that is the benchmark for an Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and we have yet to get the final word on season 2 moving forward, we would probably looking at early 2024 as the soonest Disney+ could get it on air. But now that Kennedy has announced that a second helping of Obi-Wan Kenobi isn’t in active development, early 2024 is likely out. Plus, Hollywood is now dealing with the writer’s strike, which appears likely it will last some time.
Hayden Christensen Will Be Featured In Ahsoka
When news broke that Hayden Christensen would jump back into his Darth Vader role in the first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars fans were thrilled. They apparently have put behind the mess that was the Star Wars prequels, forgiving him for the stilted and cringy dialogue delivery, and welcomed him back with open arms. Nothing wrong with that.
Christensen’s return was a hit. So much so that Disney decided to ask him back for another series. No, not Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, but the upcoming Ahsoka series starring Rosario Dawson. Apparently, though, Dawson got a slap on the hand when she let slip on Instagram, in a now-deleted post, that Christensen would be making an appearance on her series (thankfully she didn’t drop the Mark Hamill news as well).
In the post, she shared an article about the Christensen rumor and captioned it by saying, Skyguy…They know!!! Soon you soon, Snips.” Anyone who follows Star Wars, more to the point, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will recognize the names Skyguy and Snips as they are the nicknames Ahsoka and Anakin gave to each other.
Unfortunately, the news had not been made public. Dawson told Vanity Fair, “I looked in my email, and ‘Star Wars’ was like, ‘You might want to take that down,'” Dawson recalled. “I’m like, ‘Man, I can’t be trusted.'”
The cat’s been out of the bag for some time as it pertains to Ahsoka and Christensen’s return as Vader. Now we also know the current fate of Obi-Wan Kenobi and the chances of seeing a second season. Keep pushin’, fans have been known to get a lot accomplished when voicing their opinions.
