The Best Holiday Musical Is Making A Killing On The Streaming Charts
The Nightmare Before Christmas has moved to #9 on the Netflix streaming charts.
As the summer comes to a close, many folks are looking forward to autumn and the Halloween season, with stores and others getting a jump on it all and heading right into the winter holidays. If you’re hoping to toe that incredibly thin line between Halloween and Christmas, you could join the ranks with many Netflix viewers who are putting The Nightmare Before Christmas in the #9 spot on the streamer.
That’s right, at this rate the Henry Selick-directed flick is going to absolutely land that sequel with the support of such dedicated fans who are launching the film early on in the spooky and holiday season.
Frightening and delighting audiences for almost 30 years, The Nightmare Before Christmas combined the talents of stop motion master Henry Selick, magical musical composer Danny Elfman, and the ever creative, Tim Burton, making a visually stunning, musical flick that would captivate viewers both young and old.
The feature tells the story of Jack Skellington, aka the Pumpkin King of the land of Halloween Town. Upon adventuring into a magical forest filled with portals to other holidays, Jack stumbles into Christmas Town and quickly becomes obsessed with the joy-filled festivities, and hopes to bring them back to the ghouls of Halloween Town.
Elfman, a celebrated name in music both in and out of the film world, voiced the role of Jack in The Nightmare Before Christmas. He was joined by an all star list of vocal talent including Chris Sarandon, Catherine O’Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page, Paul Reubens, Glenn Shadix, and Ed Ivory. With a multitude of toe tapping tunes, each one more catchy than the last, there’s no way you’re leaving without the entire score stuck in your head.
Although it’s become a classic feature for specifically the millennial generation, the film initially didn’t pick up the steam production had expected. During its first release, The Nightmare Before Christmas brought in $50 million in the box office. But, as luck would have it, in the future there would be a cry from fans to give it another theatrical run.
And not only did it receive one re-release, but the film has made its way back into theaters several times during the years of 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2020, driving up its sales by over $40 million. In fact, The Nightmare Before Christmas has even been re-released by way of 3D, making it that much more enjoyable to view the incredible art direction that went into making it the cult classic that it is today.
Henry Selick would go on to crush the competition when it came to what was possible in the world of stop-motion animation. In the years that followed The Nightmare Before Christmas, Selick lent his name to a slew of projects including James and the Giant Peach, Monkeybone, and Coraline.
After Coraline wowed audiences, Selick took a break from making features, but will soon come back onto the scene via Netflix’s Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key led Wendell & Wild – which comes out in just one month.
Both inside and outside the world of film Danny Elfman is a name known widely for his mystical-sounding compositions. From his new wave band, Oingo Boingo, to composing pieces for projects including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Spider-Man, and Corpse Bride, Elfman has had a long and successful career lending his talents to some of the biggest blockbusters of all time.
Most recently, the musician played an incredibly well-received set at Coachella and penned the music for Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
One of Elfman’s constant collaborators, Tim Burton is the last member of the trio that made The Nightmare Before Christmas the hit that it was. The story for the film was based on a poem penned by the legendary director almost one decade earlier. Burton and Elfman’s combined work will be on display again soon via Netflix’s spooky series, Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega as the murderous daughter from The Addams Family.
