Two entities that make their brands from the unusual and twisted are A24 Studio, producers of such films as Hereditary, The Witch, The Lobster, and The Florida Project, and actor Nicolas Cage. The two have finally collaborated on a film called Dream Scenario and Comicbook has the first look from director Kristoffer Borgli in the form of pictures shared on his Instagram. In them, Nicolas Cage is a balding, shlumpy professor, complete with a corduroy jacket and glasses straight out of the 1970s, slide seven starts the first look at the actor.

The Instagram post is Kristoffer Borgli’s way of celebrating a 2022 that, for him, was a good year. His release of Sick of Myself earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival has led to critical acclaim for the movie, and the new movie was set to film from October until around Christmastime. Nicolas Cage stars alongside an ensemble cast that includes Julianne Nicholson, Dylan Baker, Kate Berlant, Michael Cera, Dylan Gelula, and Tim Meadows.

Also written by Kristoffer Borgli, the movie follows Nicolas Cage’s dimwitted character as he suddenly appears in everyone’s dreams, all at once. Borgli is known for cutting satire about the chase for fame and attention, including his 2017 debut movie Drip, and the more recent Sick of Myself. Not much else is known about the plot of Dream Scenario, but it is a safe bet that the movie will contain similar themes about the pursuit and attainment of fame.

Kristoffer Borgli’s films are dark comedies with an offbeat sense of humor, which puts them right in the wheelhouse of a studio like A24. The studio is known for unconventional films and works with a variety of genres, ranging from the frightening to the heartbreaking to the laugh-out-loud hilarious. Nicolas Cage’s introduction to the studio promises to be just as unorthodox as any project from either its director or its studio.

Dream Scenario is also produced by A24 hero Ari Aster, who broke out in 2018 and 2019 with the back-to-back releases of Hereditary and Midsommar. Both movies helped bring the studio further into public consciousness and made their director a formidable name in cinema. In addition to producing Kristoffer Borgli’s Nicolas Cage movie, Aster also has a movie in post-production called Beau Is Afraid, formerly called Disappointment Blvd.

Nicolas Cage has a long and prolific career that dates back to teen movies of the early 1980s such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He is famously the nephew of Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola but changed his name to Cage to be seen on the merits of his own talent, although he is credited by his birth name, Nicolas Kim Coppola, in his recent endeavor, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. He is known for playing a wide variety of characters, from action heroes to bookish professors to maniacal villains.

Now, Nicolas Cage has put on a beard and a bald head for Dream Scenario, inviting us to view the actor from a new aspect as his character bumbles his way through his unusual circumstances. The movie has just headed into post-production, so Kristoffer Borgli’s post will have to satisfy audiences for now as we anticipate its 2024 release date.
