After canceling their Marvel series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Punisher, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Defenders, Netflix came back to the superhero series in a big way with The Umbrella Academy. Now, Netflix has unveiled the first look at their next superhero series, with the first trailer for Jupiter’s Legacy

Based on the limited series comic from Kick-Ass, and Kingsman: The Secret Service’s Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, Jupiter’s Legacy is the story of the world’s first superheroes – who got their powers in the 1930s – in the present day. The series also follows their children who also have superpowers, and their struggle to try and live up to their parent’s legacies.

While this first trailer doesn’t show any actual footage from Jupiter’s Legacy, the less-than-a-minute trailer does show the characters from the comic coming to life. Starring in the series is Josh Duhamel, who plays Sheldon Sampson, also known as The Utopian. Also appearing is Ben Daniels as Walter Sampson, and Leslie Bibb as Grace Samson. Elena Kampouris and Andrew Horton will be playing Chloe and Brandon Sampson, respectively, the daughter and son of Grace and Sheldon. Chase Tang will also be playing the supervillain Baryon in a guest role.

Jupiter's Legacy

Jupiter’s Legacy is created by Steven S. DeKnight, who will also be the showrunner. DeKnight has previously worked as a writer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as wrote and directed for Angel, Smallville, and Dollhouse. DeKnight was also the creator of Starz’s Spartacus, and was the showrunner for season one of Netflix’s Daredevil. With a history of adapting superhero stories to the screen, DeKnight seems like a great choice to adapt Millar and Quitely’s story for Netflix.

However, Millar and Quitely’s series was only a run of ten episodes, and while this first season is eight episodes, it’s unclear what Jupiter’s Legacy will do if the series is renewed for a second season. Originally, it was planned that Jupiter’s Legacy would be a series of films, but the project shifted to a series once Netflix acquired Millarworld. Jupiter’s Legacy did receive a spinoff series, entitled Jupiter’s Circle, but only led to two volumes.

Yet it seems like streaming services are about to be inundated with great superhero series. In addition to a new season of The Umbrella Academy in the works, HBO Max will also be debuting Zack Snyder’s Justice League in just a few weeks, and Hulu has several animated superhero series coming in the near future as well. Of course, Disney+ is probably leading the superhero television series craze right now, with WandaVision set to conclude its season this Friday, and with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki series both coming in the first half of this year.

Jupiter's Legacy

But with Netflix acquiring Millarworld, Jupiter’s Legacy seems like it would be the first of many projects that Netflix is planning to make based on Mark Millar’s work. Yet we can see how Netflix does adapt Millar’s comics when Jupiter’s Legacy debuts on Netflix on May 7th, 2021.
