Netflix’s Hottest Show Is A Dark Fantasy Epic And Fans Are Already Rallying To Save It

If you’re into fantasy stories like The Rings of Power, then it’s only a matter of time before a studio discovers some of your favorite books and decides to adapt them into a movie or television show (call it the Hunger Games formula). That recently happened when Netflix turned the Shadow and Bone novels from Leigh Bardugo into a series. Now, Flix Patrol reports this show is in the Netflix Top 10 for this week, but despite fans clearly loving the show, Netflix has yet to renew it for a second season.

Even if you’ve never seen this Netflix show before, its fantasy trappings will likely sound a bit familiar to those who love this genre. For example, it is a world where fictional nations vie for power (shades of Game of Thrones), and some people discover they are Grisha, meaning they have magical abilities and most must eventually use those abilities to defend the nation of Ravka (shades of Star Wars, where Jedi are trained and eventually called upon to defend the Republic). The show mostly revolves around Alina Starkov, a young cartographer for Ravka who discovers she is a Grisha and may even be a hero of prophecy (shades of Harry Potter and just about every YA story).

In addition to being a clear hit with fans, Netflix’s Shadow and Bone has been a hit with critics as well. For example, the first season has an impressive 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. And while it didn’t end up taking home the trophies, the show was previously nominated for best VFX at the IFTA Film & Drama Awards and Best Science Fiction or Fantasy TV Series at the Dragon Awards (which is particularly impressive for a new show competing in a crowded field of genre television).

In addition to breaking into the Netflix Top 10, Shadow and Bone also recently took the crown from You as the most-watched show on the streaming platform. Though there doesn’t seem to be a single organized movement (yet), fans have recently been rallying on social media and pleading with Netflix to renew this hit show for a third season, with some of them threatening to stop subscribing to the beleaguered streamer.

It may seem like a no-brainer for Netflix to renew their most popular show, but it wasn’t that long ago that Netflix declined to renew 1899 despite intense fan demand and a popular Change.org petition.

From where we’re sitting (and streaming), Netflix is a streaming platform that needs all the hit original content it can get after a year of unforced errors and PR debacles (we’re still angry about that password-sharing controversy). And it would be a shame if fans didn’t get to see more adventures of this amazing fantasy universe. In the meantime, if you’re a fan and want to do your part, be sure to take to social media and let Netflix know that you need another season of Shadow and Bone in your life.
