After three years, Netflix has finally announced the return of the time-bending sci-fi series Russian Doll. The release date for season two was revealed in a teaser that gave fans a tiny glimpse at what the new episodes have to offer. Created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler, the first season premiered in February 2019.

In the video clip, Nadia is seen traversing time and space through a very trippy-looking subway ride. This brings her back to the familiar bathroom door that started it all. “When the universe f**ks with you? Let it,” says Nadia, before taking a sip of her drink. According to the show’s logline (via The Hollywood Reporter), season two of Russian Doll will continue to explore existential themes through a sci-fi lens that’s often humorous. Discovering a fate even worse than endless death, Nadia and Alan will delve deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations. At first, their experience appears to be an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure. But they soon realize this new extraordinary event is more than they bargained for. And together, they must search for a way out.

Russian Doll season one followed game developer Nadia Vulvokov who is stuck in a very Groundhog Day existence. She was caught in a time loop as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable New York City party. She died repeatedly, always restarting at the same moment as she tried to figure out what was happening to her. This led her to find Alan Zaveri, who was experiencing the same thing in a different event.

The eight-episode series received four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for its first season run, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series and another for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Russian Doll’s second season promises to up the ante. Four years after Nadia and Alan outsmarted their mortality time loop fate, they take a trip through a Manhattan time portal. This chain of events sets them on yet another universe-bending adventure.

Russian Doll stars Natasha Lyonne as Nadia Vulvokov and Charlie Barnett as Alan Zaveri. Starring alongside the time-looping duo is Greta Lee as Maxine, Nadia’s friend who throws her 36th birthday party. Yul Vazquez appears as John Reyes, a real estate agent and Nadia’s ex-boyfriend who is in the middle of a divorce. Elizabeth Ashley is featured Ruth Brenner, a therapist and close family friend of Nadia and her mother. The supporting cast includes Brooke Timber as a young Nadia and Kate Jennings Grant who portrays a young Ruth. Annie Murphy (of Schitt’s Creek fame) is set to join the cast for season two.

Natasha Lyonne serves as showrunner and executive producer for Russian Doll season two. The new season will also be executive produced by Alex Buono, Poehler, and Kate Arend for Paper Kite Productions, Headland, Lilly Burns, and Tony Hernandez for Jax Media. Dave Becky for 3 Arts, as well as Regina Corrado and Allison Silverman, will also produce.

The second season of Russian Doll will hit Netflix on April 20, 2022.
