Netflix Just Renewed Ginny & Georgia For Another Season

Netflix renewed Ginny & Georgia for two more seasons.

In the recent past, Netflix has made a number of embarrassing unforced errors, including the fiasco where they tried to punish users for sharing their passwords with friends and family after previously encouraging everyone to do so. This was the company’s response to their overall subscriber count going down for the first time, which made investors freak out. Now, even though Netflix is dealing with the writers’ strike, there is some good news for the platform and its fans: The Hollywood Reporter reports that Ginny & Georgia, one of their most popular shows, has been renewed for another two seasons and has landed a new showrunner.

If you’ve never watched Ginny & Georgia, the best way to imagine the series is that it is like a modernized version of the hit comedy series Gilmore Girls. As with Gilmore Girls, Ginny & Georgia focuses on the close relationship between mother and daughter (our titular characters) as they navigate all of the unexpected challenges that life throws their way. Brianne Howey and Antonia Gentry play the main characters, and they have the kind of powerful onscreen chemistry that keeps winning more fans over.

In fact, Ginny & Georgia has been one of Netflix’s most reliable shows in recent history, with the show ranking in the top 10 original streaming programs for eight weeks. Nielsen reports that the show’s audience streamed it for a collective (and staggering) 10.5 billion minutes during that time. In 2023 alone, the show is one of Netflix’s most-watched programs, and it will be interesting to see if the show continues to thrive with a new showrunner.

Previously, it was showrunner Debra J. Fisher who helped to make Ginny & Georgia into such a viral sensation, but she stepped down after season two. The new showrunner is Sarah Glinski, arguably best known for her work on Degrassi: The Next Generation, so she definitely knows how to write convincing young characters (something dramas such as Euphoria struggle with). Netflix also lucked out with the timing of this hiring: Glinkski was hired just before the writer’s strike went into effect, which means that even without scripts, she may be able to do other things behind the scenes to prepare for the show’s third season.

The third season premiere will be especially important because the second season of Ginny & Georgia ended with a cliffhanger that left fans screaming. Getting a two-season renewal means that Glinski can not only wrap up that storyline, but she can also begin mapping out how to bring the story to a successful close. Series creator Sarah Lampert always imagined this show would last for no longer than four seasons, so it looks like this is one original Netflix show that will get to complete its story instead of being prematurely canceled (we still miss seeing you on GLOW, Alison Brie).

And while Glinksi is understandably tight-lipped about what we can expect from the next two seasons, she has guaranteed that the third season of Ginny & Georgia is going to be “a big roller coaster” after it picks up from that season two cliffhanger. We don’t know exactly when the next season will drop, but Netflix renewing the show for not one but two seasons demonstrates their confidence in the show and the showrunner. As for us, we’ll be over here biting our nails until we finally get to see how this bonkers cliffhanger gets resolved.
