Netflix Is Canceling One Of Its Longest-Running Shows
One of streaming giant Netflix's longest-running and most acclaimed series is about to take its final curtain call.
After debuting in 2017, the CBC sitcom Workin’ Moms was nominated for the International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series for two consecutive years. In the middle of its third season, Netflix introduced the show that offers an unflinching look at the absurd realities of life as a mom, to a global audience. Now, after a successful five-year run creator and star, Catherine Reitman announced that the series will end with its seventh season.
“To our incredible fans, making this show has been the ride of my life,” Reitman said about Workin’ Moms in a statement via Deadline. “Philip and I hit the ground, day one of season one, with a three-month-old and a two-year-old, watching as we pressed forward on one mission – to tell the stories of four flawed mothers, who dared to be something beyond their nurseries.” The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia alum added that going to work with brilliant writers, an extraordinary cast, and the best producing team showed her the importance of telling stories that have meaning.
“But like any story, there must be an ending,” the Workin’ Moms creator said. The 41-year-old expressed her love and gratitude to everyone for supporting the show over the years, with a special mention to CBC and Netflix for getting behind a series that points a flashlight into the darkest corners of motherhood. Speaking directly to fans, she thanks those who stopped her in the street, to share their love of the show. “I see you. I hear you. And I thank you. Go get ’em mamas,” she told the publication.
Workin’ Moms is a daring comedy that tests the modern ideal that women really can have it all. The story shifts viewers’ gaze away from shiny twenty-somethings taking over the streets of New York or Los Angeles. Instead, the series deals with four 30+ women trying to balance their kids, careers, and complicated private lives. These women are not struggling to make a mark on the world. They are simply on a quest to keep finding themselves.
According to CBC, the seventh season of Workin’ Moms begins right where season six left off, with the women confronting demons from their past to move forward into their future. Kate is learning how to let go of her workaholic personality and just wants her loved ones to be happy. Sloane is balancing being a working mom since bringing her baby into the world during the previous season’s finale. Jenny is still jobless. And Anne is attending anger management classes while trying to save her marriage to Lionel.
Motherhood, relationships, and career choices will be tested as they come to terms with the people they used to be and where they are headed. Working’ Moms stars Catherine Reitman as Kate Foster, Dani Kind as Anne Carlson, Enuka Okuma as Sloane Mitchell, Jessalyn Wanlim as Jenny Matthews, and Sarah McVie as Valerie “Val” Szalinsky. Juno Rinaldi appeared as Frankie Coyne for five seasons before leaving the show to pursue other opportunities.
Like its predecessors, the new season of Workin’ Moms will be filmed in and around Toronto. The series will premiere on CBC and CBC Gem in late 2023. This will be followed by a global release on Netflix. The show is produced by Catherine Reitman’s Wolf + Rabbit Entertainment with the financial participation of the Canada Media Fund and Netflix.
