We’ve finally got our first look at  Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor for Doctor Who, via Twitter. Alongside him is Millie Gibson, who will play his companion Ruby Sunday. Gatwa looks great as the next Time Lord of the long-running BBC show.

Ncuti Gatwa taking on Doctor Who should only help his speedy rise to superstardom. He recently broke into the Hollywood mainstream with the critically-acclaimed Netflix series Sex Education. His role earned him a BAFTA Scotland Award and three BAFTA Television Award nominations.

Before Ncuti Gatwa officially enters the world of Doctor Who and makes history as the first black actor to take on the role, 1oth Doctor David Tennant will be returning to reprise the role for a three-episode special. Tennant has long been a favorite amongst fans, so they’ll undoubtedly be excited to see him back in the role.

Ncuti Gatwa will be inheriting the Doctor Who mantle from Jodie Whittaker, who was the first woman to play the role. Whittaker played the role of the 13th Doctor from 2018 to 2022. Of course, Gatwa will be the 15th Doctor and Tennant is playing the 14th Doctor in his brief upcoming appearance, explaining the jump from 13 to 15.

The Many Doctors Who

Ncuti Gatwa has a pretty exciting slate of projects coming up along with his Doctor Who role. He’ll be appearing in the upcoming TV mini-series Masters of the Air, which follows eleven men in a bomber fighting off German fighters behind enemy lines. Along with Gatwa, Masters of the Air will star Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Ben Radcliffe, Rafferty Law, Edward Ashley, Nate Mann, David Shields, Elliot Warren, and Darragh Cowley.

Ncuti Gatwa is nabbing more than just massive TV shows like Masters of the Air and Doctor Who. He’s also set to appear in the upcoming Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie film, which will be coming out on July 21, 2023. The movie is co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and stars Margot Robbie along with Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emerald Fennell, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Rhea Perlman, Nicola Coughlan, Ariana Greenblatt, Ritu Arya, America Ferrara, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Jamie Demetriou, Alexandra Shipp, and Marisa Abela.

While fans wait for Ncuti Gutwa to fill the Doctor Who role, they can look forward to the aforementioned Tennant special that is set to come out in November. Along with Tennant, Catherine Tate will be reprising her role as his companion Donna Noble. Yasmin Finney and Neil Patrick Harris are also set to appear in the special.

There’s no word yet on when we can expect to officially see Ncuti Gutwa in Doctor Who, but we can likely expect to see it near the end of 2023. This is based on the fact that showrunner Russell T. Davies said “we’re giving you a year to speculate” back in October, so we have a little while to wait. There’s little doubt that Gutwa is going to be a perfect addition to the historic show and that he undoubtedly go up against some Daleks and other horrors.
