When the Nicolas Cage blockbuster National Treasure came out in 2004, it was an instant favorite, and such is its popularity that even today fans keep yearning for a third film in the series. While that may take some time, we have something else to be stocked about- a new National Treasure series that is coming to Disney+! So, if watching Ben Gates’ carrying out an incredible heist in the films is still your number one favorite, then get ready to watch a fresh set of adventures set around the same theme. The only thing missing (that would have made this one mega-amazing news) is the lack of Nicolas Cage as the lead character. But then what’s is its story going to be? Let’s see, shall we?

The first two National Treasure films featured the character of Ben Gates, played by Nicolas Cage, an amateur cryptologist who comes from a family of treasure hunters. His mission is to search for a massive national treasure and important documents like the Declaration of Independence that carry crucial clues leading to it, in order to protect it from being stolen by thieves.

As reported by Deadline in March, the series has been greenlit with a 10-episode order. The new series is a “reimagining of the National Treasure franchise” and instead of Nicolas Cage’s Ben Gates, the story will focus on protagonist Jess Morales who is a 20-year-old DREAMer. She, along with her group of friends, embark on a unique mission- to unweave the mysteries around her family history and recover a lost treasure along the way. As per the report, the series will be exploring “the timely issues of identity, community, historical authorship, and patriotism.”

As not many details are known about the National Treasure series, all we can share at the moment is that it is going to star a Latina actress and will be directed by Mira Nair. The original National Treasure writers, Marianne and Cormac Wibberley are returning to pen the series while the film’s original producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be producing the series that is set to star a younger cast of adventurers.

Take a breather National Treasure fans as Nicolas Cage is not bidding farewell to the franchise. While the National Treasure series on Disney+ is all set to follow a different trajectory, the film series will continue with the original story and the original cast! The plans for a third National Treasure film have been discussed since 2008 but it was only In September 2017, that producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that a script for the film has been completed. But then Disney was then satisfied with the script and was not on board with National Treasure 3.

But after spending years in development hell, the year 2020 saw some major progress in the film’s planning. In January 2020, it was announced that a third film was officially in development and Chris Bremner will be penning the script. Bruckheimer has also assured that the original cast from the prior films is going to reprise their roles which means Nicolas Cage too, is returning as badass historian Ben Gates.

In fact, series producer Bruckheimer even told Collider in May last year that a third National Treasure “is being written right now.” As per recent reports, National Treasure 3 is currently undergoing production with the original cast which includes, Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight, Helen Mirren, and the rest of the actors from the first two films.

No cast member for the series has been announced yet apart from the fact that it will star a Latina lead. As of now, the new Disney+ series has no trailer or release date as it’s still in production. But barring any delays and given the fact that it has been in production for some time now, we can hopefully expect its premiere on the streaming platform sometime in late 2022 or early 2023. Fingers crossed!

As stated above, the series is slated to release on Disney+, and given the platform’s recent record, it will be a weekly episodes series like WandaVision and The Mandalorian. Meanwhile, if you get a hankering to watch Nicolas Cage in action, you can catch the two films- National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets on Disney+ as well.
