Morgan Freeman is one of the great actors of our time. It’s unusual to meet someone who doesn’t care for him. He’s a bit like Mr. Rogers or Bob Ross in that the sound of his voice can help you relax. This is probably part of why he’s a sought-after voice actor and has worked on projects like March of the Penguins. It’s also what made him such a great choice for 2009’s Invictus. Was there any other possible choice for someone to play Nelson Mandela? That’s hard to imagine. If you haven’t caught this one yet, or if it’s been a while, you’ll be excited to hear that Invictus is coming to Netflix on March 1st.
When you hear that Invictus has Morgan Freeman playing Nelson Mandela, you may think this is a serious and possibly depressing historical film. That we’ll be seeing the former President of South Africa in his early years, where he spent 27 years in prison. Invictus took a very different strategy. While this is a serious and historical movie, it’s also a sports film starring Matt Damon.
The story for Invictus follows Nelson Mandela as the newly elected President of South Africa. Apartheid has just ended. The white and Black people of South Africa are not getting along well, to say the least. Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela is facing a country of people who need to come together. During this time, the President attends a rugby match and watches as the white audience cheers for their country’s rugby team, and the Black citizens of South Africa cheer for England.
The President of South Africa takes stock of the situation. These are his people. It’s his job to make them get along. What do both groups love? Rugby. And so, Morgan Freeman calls up Matt Damon, a star rugby player, and asks for a meeting. There, the President makes clear to the rugby player that he would very much appreciate it if the guy could please make sure the South African team wins the world cup for South Africa. No pressure or anything, right? The President, who was famously anti-apartheid and spent 27 years in prison fighting for his beliefs, has just asked you to help resolve post-apartheid struggles in your country by winning the 1995 World Cup. No biggie. You can watch Matt Damon react to the request in the trailer for Invictus below.
Morgan Freeman has a long list of amazing movies. He’s been in standout films like The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy, and Million Dollar Baby. Still, Invictus manages to be one of his best. Clint Eastwood directed the movie. It was well-liked by critics. Times of India called it “absolutely uplifting cinema”. It was nominated for two Oscars. The budget for Invictus landed around $50 million dollars. It earned $122.2 million at the box office, which was a solid reception in 2009 for a movie that wasn’t a hit from Marvel. All around, the movie was largely considered a success.
Since the release of Invictus, Morgan Freeman’s career has continued to be varied and interesting. He was in Olympus Has Fallen with Gerard Butler. The movie sparked a franchise. We’re currently awaiting Has Fallen 4. He also completed his time in The Dark Knight trilogy. In 2013, he took part in Now You See Me and its sequel. Freeman had a voice part in The Lego Movie, and recently showed up in an episode of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?.
When Morgan Freeman isn’t on screen, he’s hanging out on his 124-acre ranch, which he turned into a bee sanctuary. He has publicly said a few times that he only wears any protective equipment when harvesting. The bees won’t touch him. Perhaps they’re picking up on his chill vibes. He’s also doing stunts for charity. He recently started a contest where you could enter to have him prank call your friends or family. Freeman would also record your outgoing voicemail message for you. It’s hard not to imagine that fans ask him for that a lot. The proceeds from the contest went to organizations like the ACLU.
Are you ready to see Morgan Freeman in something new? We’ll be seeing him in a movie this summer. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard features Morgan Freeman, Salma Hayek, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ryan Reynolds. The action-adventure comedy is a sequel to the 2017 movie and is expected to release on August 20th, 2021.
Meanwhile, if you’re in the mood for a sports movie that pushes the genre a step further, make sure to check Netflix on March first for Invictus.
