Mel Gibson interview

If you are tired of hearing about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, you are not the only one. The unfortunate aspect of the moment that shocked the world is that it sent waves through the acting and showbusiness community. Smith officially left the Academy as a result of his actions, and further punishment could happen. From getting his Best Oscar win pulled, banishment from the Academy, and more could be done to make an example of the actor. Actors that were not involved in the situation are likely tired of discussing it or even being asked about what they would have done also. Mel Gibson is one of those people. During a recent interview with Jesse Watters on Fox News, Watters asked what Gibson would have done in that situation. Gibson begins to laugh on camera before his publicist cuts in and tells Watters “That’s our time.” You can see the video below:

The question is posed around the 4:44 mark of the video, and Mel Gibson wanted nothing to do with being asked about the slap. Although he is known to be a bit of a hothead, honestly, this is as even-keeled as one could get about being asked a question that contains a hypothetical that doesn’t truly matter. Watters asks, “I was wondering if, you know, you had been the one that jumped up out of his seat and slapped Chris Rock, if you would have been treated the same way, Mel?” Gibson looks concerned at first but immediately waves his hand while laughing off the question. He clearly does not want to be asked about such a silly hypothetical. Also, he was there to promote his new film, not be asked about someone else’s actions. The question is ridiculous for a few reasons. Firstly, it is highly unlikely that the actor would have let his emotions get the better of him during a massive award ceremony. Secondly, Watters implying that Gibson is that hothead who would have slapped someone is a bit insulting. Lastly, no one knows what they would do in that situation until it happens. It’s a foolish errand to keep poking and prodding about the “what ifs” for an unheard-of situation.

There are a ton of “what ifs” that will continue to be asked about for months on end. Again, the fallout from this particular event has been massive. Will Smith could also lose a ton of new projects due to studios not wanting to work with him any longer. Mel Gibson, on the other hand, is working his way back into prime films. His newest is that of a biopic, based on the real life of Stuart Long, who was a boxer that converted into a priest when he started to get muscular dystrophy. Gibson stars in Father Stu alongside Mark Wahlberg in a film that could hold award implications for the pair later down the road.

Mel Gibson is a seasoned actor and professional. While he has clearly had his own issues while being in the spotlight, he just doesn’t want to discuss things that are out of his control, like most people. Instead of answering a question that doesn’t concern him, he laughs and moves on with his life. The world might be a better place if more people learned how to do this instead of attacking one another over ridiculous situations.
