Transformers started to make its pivot away from Michael Bay with its latest film in the franchise and will be getting a total overhaul moving forward. In fact, it looks like the next movie when get in the story of shapeshifting automobile aliens is going to get help from the Marvel Universe. That’s because Marco Ramirez is penning the script for the next Transformers movie and he’s got plenty of superhero reps under his belt already.

Marco Ramirez getting the nod to write a script for the next Transformers movie should have fans of the franchise pretty excited about what’s to come in these stories. The writer already has a number of Marvel works under his belt, all met with considerable critical praise. Those were more in the television series space, nevertheless, he should be able to bring plenty of action and heart to this franchise as well.

Ramirez’s work within the Marvel catalog was all part of the Netflix group of characters who are just now moving their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this way, he got his start on Daredevil where he served as showrunner and head writer for the second season of the series. This saw the introduction of both The Punisher and Elektra and was a fantastic follow-up story weaving in a number of Marvel plotlines from the comic books. Critics were sold on it as well with the season hitting 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. Adding him to the Transformers franchise could help to further some similar, insular story arcs.

He left Daredevil after Season 2 but stayed in Netflix’s Marvel group when he acted as showrunner for the miniseries The Defenders. This united the entire group from the platform in one story with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage joining forces to fight that gang of mystical ninjas, the Hand. Much like his other work, this one was also critically well-received with a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes

Most recently Marco Ramirez had moved out of the Marvel world and was working with Jordan Peele on the Paramount+/ CBS All Access reboot of The Twilight Zone. The series wasn’t renewed for a third season, but Ramirez is obviously now coming to work on a much bigger project with Transformers.

There’s no current title for this next Transformers movie but we know it will be another one without the services of Michael Bay in the big chair. The director is out where this franchise is concerned and the stories are looking to go a different direction. That started with 2018’s Bumblebee which began a shift away from the crazy Bay-like explosions and histrionics his films are known for. It offered a simpler story and it looks like future movies in the franchise could go down the same path. Ramirez, having worked with these kinds of stories in the Marvel universe, those more insular works set outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, could help further along this overall change for the Transformers franchise.

We’ll have to wait to see what Ramirez and director Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) come up with here for Transformers, but it should be good. Soto has experience with coming of age movies and Ramirez has work in the Marvel catalog making for what could be a great pairing.
