Despite Luke Skywalker dying in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the character made famous by Mark Hamill will play an important role in the next installment of the franchise. The revelation was made by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, who shared a few details about the upcoming movie during a recent interview with Empire.

She told the publication that the latest Star Wars outing would focus on Rey re-establishing the Jedi Order in the faraway galaxy based on the teachings of Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker. “We’re moving 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker,” she said via The Direct. “The First Order has fallen, the Jedi are in chaos. There’s even a question of how many exist anymore. And Rey’s building the New Jedi Order based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her.”

This suggests that although Mark Hamill’s iconic Jedi may not make a direct appearance, his presence will still be felt in the Star Wars universe, even in death. The aforementioned texts that Rey obtained in Episode VIII contain valuable teachings about the Jedi Order. This includes the mythical origins of the Force, early discoveries about wielding it, and the technique for repairing a Kyber Crystal.

And as anyone who has seen a Star Wars movie knows, deceased Jedi tend to show up somewhere down the line even after death, meaning we may see Mark Hamill as a Force Ghost.

Additional information about the Jedi text was revealed in the Marvel Comic Star Wars #31 from writer Charles Soule and artist Andrés Genolet. When speaking to Leia about his lost lightsaber Luke is disinterested. Instead, he stresses the importance of written teachings which are also missing. “It has knowledge of the Force and the Order that I can’t get anywhere else,” he says.

“Techniques, history, sites of great power across the galaxy,” he says. “If I lose it, I will never truly become a Jedi,” Luke continues. As such, the upcoming Star Wars movie could follow Rey (Daisy Ridley) on a quest to find a “site of great power” to establish the next Jedi Temple. And her journey could include guidance from Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker.

The untitled movie that may or may not feature more of Mark Hamill is set for release on December 19, 2025, will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. There is another Star Wars movie titled Lost Horizons which is scheduled to debut in the same year, but it is unclear if this is the same film. That movie begins decades after the Galactic Empire’s collapse and the New Republic’s rise.

Sadly, corruption has returned along with a dangerous new threat. The story follows a lost Jedi Knight who must save the corrupt Republic from the destruction it has brought upon itself. With the New Council of Jedi falling to the dark side, a new hope is needed to bring the Jedi and the Republic back to the light.

It remains to be seen if this movie features Mark Hamill.

Meanwhile, Star Wars fans have different opinions on what they want to see in a new movie. Some want to see more of the Jedi, Rey’s return, and the Force’s new facets. Others want to see the adaptation of the Heir to the Empire and the Thrawn Trilogy that it exists within the story.

But most importantly, everyone wants to see respectful nods to past Star Wars films and lore, particularly pertain to Mark Hamill’s Luke.
