Margot Robbie has been carving out a nice piece of the Hollywood business for herself, as the actress is now set to make a ton of money from starring in the Barbie film.
Margot Robbie is going to be sitting pretty in more ways than one for the upcoming Barbie movie. Robbie, who is playing the lead role, will be pulling in a $12.5 million salary for her efforts. This places her squarely as the top-paid actress in Hollywood right now, as reported by Variety. Her co-star Ryan Gosling, who will be playing the hunky Ken, is pulling in $12.5 million as well for his role. It seems like these lofty salaries will be well-earned, as the Barbie movie is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated comedies of 2023. In addition to Robbie and Gosling, Barbie has the acclaimed Greta Gerwig behind the camera and co-writing the screenplay with the also acclaimed Noah Baumbach. The cast will also feature Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, America Ferrara, Kate McKinnon, and many more.
While Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie’s salaries for Barbie are certainly impressive, they pale in comparison to the #1 highest-paid actor on Variety’s list, Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise has been blockbuster gold for decades, and Top Gun: Maverick proves he still has what it takes to bring in the box office bucks. Of course, Cruise’s secret is the deal he makes for his salary. He takes a lower fee upfront and then negotiates to get a percentage of the movie’s gross. Cruise will be employing a similar tactic for the upcoming Mission Impossible movies, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Cruise top this list again next year. Another actor on the list, Leonardo DiCaprio, employed a similar tactic for Inception, which nabbed him $50 million after all was said and done. Now, Leo can make this list without those negotiations, coming in third place thanks to the $30 million Apple is paying him for Killers of the Flower Moon. Leo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are as safe of a bet as any, but it’s still a lot of money upfront.
While Margot Robbie’s salary may be eye-popping for Barbie, she’s not necessarily unfamiliar with the big bucks at this point. For Birds of Prey, her solo Harley Quinn film, she managed to nab a $10 million paycheck. The only actress coming close to Robbie this year is Millie Bobbie Brown, whose $10 million for Enola Holmes 2 on Netflix is nothing to sneeze at. Millie Bobbie Brown also starred in the hugely popular fourth season of Stranger Things, so she’s having a great year. The next woman on the list is Emily Blunt, who is receiving $4 million for her appearance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Blunt is receiving the same amount as her other superstar co-stars like Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr. While these three can undoubtedly ask for more than $4 million, starring in a Christopher Nolan movie is worth the pay cut.
The wait to see Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the Barbie movie might be a long one, but at least Robbie has several high-profile projects lined up for fans in the near future. She’ll be starring in both Damien Chazelle’s Babylon and David O Russell’s Amsterdam, which are set to release in January 2023 and in November 2022, respectively.
