The Mandalorian has been a huge hit for Disney+. The first two seasons had fans talking. Whether you’d seen the show or not, you knew of Baby Yoda. It was inescapable. Demands for Mandalorian season 3 have been insistent, so the studio must be prioritizing their new hit over everything else, right? They’d want to keep that momentum going for their streaming service. It only makes sense. Right? Well, according to sources for Collider, the third season has been delayed due to the needs of another Star Wars show.

Those who have been keeping up to date with the upcoming Star Wars series may understandably assume that The Book of Boba Fett is causing delays for The Mandalorian season 3, but that’s not actually what Collider is hearing. That show is on target, and we will have some more updates on the status of that series below. Instead, the trouble is Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Ewan McGregor led series is filming right now. They are using the sound stages in LA that are also used by The Mandalorian. Obi-Wan Kenobi will be using them for the next several months, pushing back Mandalorian production.

Collider’s sources have told them that The Mandalorian season 3 will begin filming at the end of 2021, meaning that it’s unlikely we will see the third season premiere on Disney+ until the end of 2022.

The outlet’s sources didn’t share the studio’s reasoning behind giving the stages to Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi ahead of The Mandalorian season 3, but it’s bound to be a decision that irritates hungry Mandalorian fans. Collider speculated that Pedro Pascal’s filming schedule may have been a factor. The Last Of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay. That series is finally set to begin filming in July. His commitments may have narrowed the filming possibilities for The Mandalorian to the end of 2021. However, there will clearly more decisions involved that led to this late filming date.

As for The Book of Boba Fett, production is on schedule. While a delay for The Mandalorian season 3 may be a hard hit for fans, Disney+ may be hoping that The Book of Boba Fett will keep audiences happy enough. This particular series is a more tightly linked spinoff for The Mandalorian. In fact, sources for Collider said that audiences can think of The Book of Boba Fett as The Mandalorian season 2.5.

This makes a lot of sense, as Disney+ prioritized filming The Book of Boba Fett first and there will be characters from The Mandalorian on Boba Fett, necessitating a clear timeline for the seasons of both shows. Previously, their descriptions of The Book of Boba Fett actually confused fans to the point that audiences weren’t sure if that was what they were calling The Mandalorian season 3, or what was happening. Disney+ clarified the show’s status as being within the timeline, but its own entity, in the below tweet.

Following announcements about The Book of Boba Fett, many were hopeful that we’d see The Mandalorian season 3 in early 2022. If the sources for Collider prove true, it sounds like a late 2022 release date is most likely. At this point, everything their sources have told them matches up with other facts. We know that Obi-Wan Kenobi is filming. Everything we hear makes it sound like The Book of Boba Fett is on track. That The Mandalorian season 3 isn’t going into production for so long is a hard hit for fans, but it does make sense with everything else Disney+ is doing right now to expand their Star Wars programming. Let’s hope that Obi-Wan and Boba Fett are awesome enough to make the wait for more of The Mandalorian worth it.
